I must be the cynical and jaded one. Who wrote the speech for him?

What must I do to meet this man and shake his hand?

I love this. I want everyone, on both sides of this debate, to see this. It won’t change many minds, but…maybe a few, eh?

And then all the republican theists will only say “that’s sweet, but its god’s will not his”

Ah, yes, one of the traditional otherwise sane people with a “lifelong Republican because I had no clue what the Republicans actually stood for” story.

Actually, more “because I had no clue what the Republicans had turned into”.

To be fair, it was southern Democrats who opposed the civil rights laws in the 60s.

Yes, this country was founded on the idea of all white property-owners being equal.

I don’t see why he had to recount his military record first, it doesn’t add any weight to his opinion (I happen to agree with him, but that’s not the point). Nice speech, though.

It won’t change anyone’s mind, sadly.

I am a bad person.

I’m usually not overly fond of old people, but I want to hug this one.
As for the recounting of his military record – you may not care, but for some reason a lot of Republicans do. (I don’t understand it either)
It might change a few people’s minds. And at the very least it makes all of us who agree with him feel warm & fuzzy inside.

Bingo. By mentioning his military record first, he’s politely going “So don’t you dare question my patriotism, you motherfuckers.”
