I actually just finished reading this book Monday after reading about it on John Scalzi’s blog. As a parent of a young child, certain scenes hit me (I’m guessing) a lot more viscerally and stuck with me throughout, which really helped me empathize with the main character. The sense I got from Scalzi’s blog was a bit deceiving because of that; I was expecting more of a fantasy novel, dark, yes, but still fantasy, and you’ve pegged it appropriately as a horror novel.

Overall I liked the book and will be following his work. I agree that more backstory would have been nice, but, again, when the cover says “A Twenty Crowns Novel” you have to be prepared to read others to get it all.
