I haven’t seen all those, but a) I like the ones I have seen, and b) I haven’t heard anything about the other three that’d make me want to knock them off the list. Here are a few that might go on my list (I’ll try to restrict it to geek-type movies):

The Incredibles
Willow
The Goonies
The Specials

Oh, jeez. Can’t veto any of them, just adding:

1) Alien
2) The Dark Crystal (I wouldn’t seek it out anymore, but if I stumbled upon it I’d watch)
3) The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
4) Better Off Dead
5) Jacob’s Ladder
6) The Muppet Movie
7) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Evil Dead 2 is not all that.

The rest of that list is genius, as are most of the suggestions.

I would like to add ‘Serenity’ and ‘Repo Man,’ the world’s first truly punk movie and the finest performance of Emilio Estevez’s career.

ReplyReply

Why ZOMBIELAND over SHAUN?

The latter is far more involved with Romero–and therefore a truer celebration of the zombie and horror genres in general–while the former is just a fine, fun movie.

Put on The Fifth Element.

The Pixar movies, except for Cars, should be a 12-way tie.

I guess personally I would replace a couple:

Evil Dead II. Never really dug the Evil Dead movies that much. I’d pick The Thing.

I’ve lost a lot of love for Star Wars so I would change that for something like Blade Runner. Or Moon which I thought was awesome.

I second The Incredibles as I think it’s better than the Toy Story’s, great as they are.

I did like Iron Man but I would change that for Unbreakable. Still is my favorite great comic book movie to date

I can’t stand “Top 10” lists as they are so… calculated. One entry is the “surprise entry”, the other is the “obvious entry”… they’re designed, not chosen.

So I came up with this idea of people just coming up with their ten favourite films, not the best, their favourite, the ones that they love and would watch again and again, and every time I bring this up I am amazed at what’s chosen because ONLY THAT PERSON would make a list like that.

One of my friends had MY FAIR LADY and THE MUPPET SHOW MOVIE on her list, another friend had EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, another MAN ON THE MOON – and it is so very self-revelatory.

One of my friends had a list that had three clear divisions; Gangster movies, Sci-fi dystopias… and stoner comedies. One of my friends had 300 and… SINGING IN THE RAIN on the same list. Another listed of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, CASABLANCA, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, and STAR WARS, paused and said, “Huh… I like sand.”

So I love lists like these, because they’re no discussion about quality nor mise-en-scene or socio-political context or any of that rubbish, but only about WHY you bother seeing movies in the first place; the love of story. People just talk about what they love.

Here’s mine, in no order;
THE TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE (1986 cartoon), TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY, THE DARK KNIGHT, DUMB AND DUMBER, BACK TO THE FUTURE PART 2, THE FUGITIVE, GROUNDHOG DAY, CLUE, THE USUAL SUSPECTS, and SEVEN.

And I sat there and wondered why those movies. I was surprised that films I love like JFK, THE PRINCESS BRIDE, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and HOT FUZZ weren’t on my list and I realised that all those films came out (or I saw) before I turned 16. All of them. I love movies I saw as a kid.

And I saved space for a Batman movie.

I love this kind of list.

So the “Geek Consensus” list doesn’t appeal to me too much, but each individual’s top 10 does, and I’d love to see more of those.

Man, BLADE RUNNER got vetoed? Okay, the criterion IS “…movies that [we] love, and that [we] could sit down and watch at any time and enjoy them,” and as big a geek as I am, I have to be in the right mood to plug it in.

I can’t believe that BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA didn’t make that cut, though. When that was making the cable rounds a few years back, I was cheerfully sitting through it every six to eight weeks.

Sigh.

That said … I nominate EQUILIBRIUM, because that’s one I can always, always watch. It combines an homage to an entire genre of thought-provoking science fiction with a high-octane action movie, and leaves most bigger-budget Action-SF in the dust.

I also nominate THE COURT JESTER, which may be one of Danny Kaye’s finest tour-de-forces. “The pellet with the poison’s in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!”

And let’s throw in ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, too. “Insanity runs in my family — it practically GALLOPS!”

I would also like to answer Karellan’s comment about The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938): I doubt that I’m the only reader who HAS has seen it, has VERY strong opinions about it, and would most definitely have nominated it if it weren’t already on the list.

“Why, you speak treason!” “Fluently.”

Tijmen: Oh, I love FIGHT CLUB. If it hadn’t been on the list several times over, I would have nominated it.

I know I lose serious geek cred for not liking DONNIE DARKO, though. Really, I’ve TRIED to watch it all the way through, more than once. “It’s not you, it’s ME.” But I gotta hold with my veto.

Technically — and the distinction is important! — I didn’t say EQUILIBRIUM was “thought-provoking”. I said it was an HOMAGE to works that were thought-provoking. “If This Brave New Fahrenheit 1984 Goes On … ” To heck with that: GUNKATA!

(And the “reel” comment was a direct response to the claim that movies like the Flynn Robin Hood were still on the list because nobody had seen them. It was in lieu of “rassin’ frassin’ kids git offa my lawn mutter mutter mutter ….” )

There’s about twenty or so films in both categories that I enjoy, so I won’t veto anything. But I would like to nominate the following 10 films;

The Mummy (w. Brendan Frasier)
The Nightmare Before Christmas

Grr, I step away for ten minutes and another one pops into my head.
Add: Muppet Treasure Island.
I’d like to propose that the movies originally vetoed because they fall under the “replace x with y as the ten on the list” mentality for a finite list could be added back in since the list ISN’T finite and can sustain all we want.
and most of those didn’t say they actually vetoed the one being replaced, just that ‘Y’ was better than ‘X’.
Whew!

For those of us who came in late*, what was the original list?

Anyway, I think you’re well on your way to proving** your theory. On the internet, sooner or later, you’ll find someone who hates that particular film.

The three films currently in the list I personally would veto have already been nominated for that. And, while I agree with a lot of the others, I know they’re controversial, or have points that some people hate.

So, I’m not going to veto or add anything. Rather, I’m going to have a guess at which films I think will avoid being vetoed for the longest time***.

Wizard of Oz.
Most of the Muppet movies.
The Empire Strikes Back.
The Princess Bride.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
Unforgiven.

Personally, I would have thought that Aliens would have been in that list, but it’s already managed to pick up some genuine vetoes.

* Now there’s a somewhat obscure nerd reference for ya.

** “Proving” in the scientific paper sense, where the actual conclusion is “Obviously, more research is needed at this time.”

There would be others, but I’m not vetoing movies I haven’t seen, even if the reason I haven’t seen them is because everything I’ve heard about them has put me off bothering.

Off course if everyone followed the same criteria we’d just end up with a list of movies so obscure that nobody but the proposer had ever seen, so it’s perhaps not a perfect system.

@Plok – given the original parameters “just ten movies that I love, and that I could sit down and watch at any time and enjoy them”, I’m not sure how many people would include To Kill a Mockingbird. There are a number of great movies that I’d need to be in the right mood to watch.

Veto Spaceballs, The Man with Two Brains, and The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Add Kiki’s Delivery Service, A Night at the Opera.

@Marionette – John clarifies in the update that the list doesn’t have to stay at ten. In his words, “It can be as long as it needs to.”

ReplyReply
mygif

Oh, and I’m attempting to make an updated list, but this thing is bloody unwieldy!

ReplyReply
mygif

@Marionette It’s interesting, right? What are the hidden criteria behind “could sit down and enjoy at any time”? How high is that bar? For me it’s pretty low — there’s not a lot of movies I like that I’d have to be in the right mood to say “oh, awesome, “X” is on!”

Surely your “A Night At The Opera” will stick…how many moods does a person have to have, before most of them aren’t “right” for the Marx Brothers?

Add Dark Star, Gone With The Wind, Sixteen Candles, Without A Clue, Sleuth, and The World Of Henry Orient. There: all over the damn map.

@Jonathan – What I was saying had nothing to do with the number.

@Plok – I’m not sure there’s much hidden in the criteria, but the “any time” factor is going to be a bit limiting on more challenging films. Not sure Night at the Opera will stick, given that The Princess Bride was kicked.

@Eh – which version of the Wicker Man? I love the original, in all its seventiesness, but I’d veto the remake like a shot.

Okay, how about I veto the remake and add the original, just to cover all bases?

@plok: It was my understanding that we were just supposed to add/veto things, not get into discussions about the merits of a particular film, but since you asked:

No, I vetoed “To Kill a Mockingbird” because other than Gregory Peck’s performance, I am unable to find anything good about that film. I don’t find heavy handed stories about racism with a protagonist I don’t care about and terrible pacing worth watching.

If I had the attitude that you suggest, then I would have vetoed Lawrence of Arabia, but I didn’t, because it is actually good.

Fantomex, don’t think I’m mad! I didn’t mean to suggest you had a bad attitude, even though I did jokingly suggest you were the devil (it was the “Veto Stagecoach” thing that got me). And just to be clear, it was my understanding also that no one had to justify their vetoes, but I just hadda ask…to the air, if no one else!…about TKAM. I mean if someone really wanted to know why I vetoed/added what I vetoed/added, I’m totally prepared to come across with the goods…but didn’t necessarily expect you to answer me, so thanks for explaining anyway.

It’s a pretty good explanation. Obviously what I was curious about was how a person could turn down watching Gregory Peck be Atticus Finch, a thing I’d do any day of the week, and that you said it was everything other than Gregory Peck…well, I disagree obviously (esp. about the pacing!), but I gotta confess that if I had to see it without Gregory Peck being in it, yeah, I might not be so automatically interested. So, you can separate that stuff out, and I can’t…but to each his own, I say.

And hey! Didn’t mean to say I thought you actually were the devil, you know? Apologies if I offended.

And to anybody else out there: we don’t have to give our reasons…but do you think we could keep from spitting venom at one another if we did give our reasons?

I mean if we can’t reach a consensus, maybe a conversation.

However maybe that’s the scotch talking.

Also, just being generically pessimistic, but after a cursory glance through the comments I don’t think any kind of unanimous vote is possible. At best, you’ll get movies that some people like and no one else cares about enough to veto.

You said that because of Stagecoach? Seriously? I don’t mean this in a condescending way, don’t misunderstand me, but have you seen it recently? I know people have this idea of it being this great film, but it simply doesn’t hold up. At. All.

Sure, the dolly-in to Ringo’s face while he does the Terminator one-handed cocking trick is cool, but aside from him and (arguably) Dallas, the other characters are one-note caricatures who have neither good writing nor charismatic performances to bring them above the level of groan-inducing.

Don’t worry, I wasn’t offended. 🙂 And I’m all for conversation, since a consensus (at least, of the nature proposed in the post) is obviously going to be impossible.

May I veto the “that I could sit down and watch at any time and enjoy them” criterion? To me, that has very little at all to do with “awesome.” When 50 First Dates shows up on teevee, I stop changing channels, because it requires absolutely* no effort to watch. I can watch it while playing WoW; I can watch it while cooking dinner; if I had it on my iPod I could listen to it in the car and still enjoy it. But it’s not awesome. Metropolis, on the other hand, is definitely awesome, but there’s absolutely no point to watching it unless I can give it my undivided attention. Why does a movie become somehow less “awesome” because it commands my undivided attention? I honestly can’t reconcile “films that I love” with “could watch at any time.”

At any rate, here’s my veto fodder, based solely on the “is it awesome” criterion:
ADD:
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Metropolis (2001)
Baxter (1989)
The Seventh Seal
Primer
The Fall

* – that’s a lie, I do have to pay attention for 10 seconds so I get to see the penguin covered in whipped cream.

ReplyReply

@ Chris – I think we moved into the “It is awesome” territory a looong time ago unless there are people who, while flipping through the channels, will automatically say, “Hey, Schindler’s List is on again! Awesome, I’ve gotta watch this for the dozenth time!”

@ Thornae – The original list has been gone so long that it doesn’t matter anymore. The list at the top of the page is over 140 comments behind the current list.

That said, I think the original list was:
Toy Story 2
Iron Man
Evil Dead 2
Star Wars
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Clue
Big Trouble in Little China
Shaun of the Dead
Ghostbusters
I forget the last one.

I totally cannot believe that Strange Days has not been vetoed by somebody yet. Once again, please not that I am not vetoing Strange Days, Internet.

@Jonathan: I think that what we’re finding more than anything is that there are particular categories of film that a (film literate) person will automatically sit down and watch. There are some things that we will sit down and watch because they are awesome or are a personal favorite (Ghostbusters, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark) but there are also films that we can sit and watch absently because of the sheer artistry on display. I kidded the crowd not when I suggested Blade Runner, Koyannisqatsi, and several others. These are are films that don’t have to be watched for the story or the explosions or the tits, they are so artfully made and full of such lush imagery and fine design that the right kind of viewer can just soak in them. I know that plenty of “general audience” viewers find Blade Runner to be one of the most tedious films ever made, but I stand by on old assertion that I could just sit and stare at it for hours on end, and I doubt that I’m alone here.

Note: The above is not a dig at anyone posting or reading. I understand that film is purely subjective and we are all entitled to our opinions. However, since the whole point of this exercise is to achieve consensus, I think is is also important to try and determine and comprehend where everyone is coming from with their posts.

Veto Logan’s Run.

I think at this point, we’ve found there can be no true consensus, but there might possibly exist a list of movies so obscure nobody else has heard of them, or so niche that everybody who’s heard of them is required to (at least pretend to) like them.

Yet I’m still having fun.

What boggles my mind is guy who came in, called it a waste of time, and said veto everything. Yeah, it’s a waste of time, but it’s a waste of our time, so what’s it to ya?

plox: “Of your nominations: “Return To Oz” survives.”

Oh man, it’ll be hilarious if that one actually goes through. I mean, the movie’s absolutely fantastic, but it’s fantastic as a /horror/ movie and generally hated as a sequel to The Wizard of Oz (by anyone who hasn’t read the books, which are entirely creepy enough already at times). I’m not sure if anyone else likes that movie nearly as much as I do, I expected that to be my most contentious choice.

@Jonathan: Well, and that’s illustrative of the problem with trying to build consensus in this way. Check out the discussion of Koyaanisqatsi last night – two people suggest vetoing it because it’s not for any occasion. So if “we” have moved into a realm of “is it awesome” but one person is still hanging around vetoing movies that are awesome part of the time, that criterion is still relevant.

@ Mister Arkham & Chris – My point was poorly made, but I was essentially suggesting that the average viewer will be unlikely to agree with the idea that some of the more artistic or emotionally involving films are “watch any time films.” I would suggest that, barring a small minority (I may be wrong about it being a minority, but the success of Avatar and Transformers 2 suggests otherwise), most viewers are incapable of (or unwilling to) watch films based on sheer artistry on multiple occasions. I haven’t seen Koyaanisqatsi, so I can’t speak to that, but I know that I am not emotionally capable of watching Schindler’s List on any and every occasion, regardless of how brilliant I think the film stands as an artistic statement. In essence, I think that vetoing the “that I could sit down and watch at any time and enjoy them” criteria changes the nature of the list. At that point, it simply becomes (has become?) a list of what everyone thinks are the best films ever made.

I believe that the failure to take into account the kind of list being generated is why there have been so many people being actively annoyed when they see a favorite vetoed. Hence, perhaps 50 First Dates fits, and Koyaanisqatsi does not. One of these is more likely to have more people say, “Yeah, I could watch that any time,” regardless of internal film merit. The list isn’t about merit; it’s about watchability.

Thus, my statement, that we’ve moved into “It is awesome” territory, was intended to indicate that we, as a collective, have long since moved away from the stated purpose of the list.

This comment is way too long, and I have nothing to veto.

Vetoing Ingloirious Basterds, and not because the spelling makes me cringe, either.

@Jonathan: I think I see your point, or can at least accept it. My previous statement regarding films such as Blade Runner and the ‘qatsi films is derived more from the standpoint that they are films that a viewer can lose himself in on the merit of the visuals alone, without the film ever becoming offensive to his sensibilities like a Transformers 2. Ultimately though, this is not a fashion in which many people are comfortable watching films, and perhaps this is a criteria better suited to another list.

That said, I have to wonder how much of this list does still meet the base criteria that you provided us with: “…movies that I love, and that I could sit down and watch at any time and enjoy them.” From this, I take your meaning to be that these are to be films that we can sit down and give our undivided attention too over and over while always being entertained by them. While I’m proud to say that most of the ideas that I have submitted do fall into this camp for me, I would be lying if I said that all of them did. With that in mind, I have to wonder how true this is of everyone, or if I am now misinterpreting the spirit of the exercise.

That said, I think that in the end, all that we’ll ever really be able to agree on is that Ghostbusters kicks absolute ass.

Until you collapse that potential by actually watching it, you not only love it to pieces and hate it with a passion, but are also entirely indifferent to it, and all responses inbetween.

Therefore any movie you have not seen is, by definition, a movie you think is awesome, so it would be dishonest of you to veto it.

Did Tijmen veto the entire list? I think it just goes to prove that however many people on the internet try to build a concensus, there’s always going to be some troll come along to screw it over.

Veto everything Tijmen added, even the stuff I like, because I’m that pissed off.

ReplyReply

Actually, no, I did not veto the entire list. I carefully went through it and removed only selectively. But hey, if you don’t want to follow that example, be my guest…troll.

ReplyReply
mygif

Also: my vetoing is proportionate to my adding – the same can’t be said for you, who threw out perfectly awesome flicks like ‘the Fly’ & ’12 Monkeys’ in favor of such thrilling fare as ‘Heathers’ & ‘Bride & Prejudice’.

Way to go in establishing *Geek Consesus*, puppet person! You’re just upset your mainstream movie wankfest got interrupted by someone with an actual shred of imagination & taste.

I never thought I’d see the day where The Big Crime Wave, Kitchen Party, Top of the Food Chain, and waydowntown were considered too mainstream for anybody. Indie Canadian cinema has made it big! Too bad it lacks any shred of imagination or taste; guess that’s what happens when it becomes a bloated corporate machine.

@Tijmen – yeah, I was playing nice with others and discussing the whole idea and you turn up late and drive a truck through it and I’m the troll. Sure.

And dissing other people’s choices? That’s not trollish at all.

But you’ve answered the central question of the debate for me, at least. No, there can’t be a consensus because there will always be some jerk come along and trash anything that he doesn’t fit his narrow views.

I’m outa here.

P.S. Twelve Monkeys was obvious and boring to me. But lots of people like it so I’m not going to be a jerk and insist it’s a bad movie.

Much as I hate the fact that Tijem got rid of almost every movie worth watching on the list, I cannot in good conscience veto everything he added. Still, there are a mass of films here that certainly aren’t on my watch any time list. Most of the rest are films I haven’t seen and won’t veto on principle, but there are some good ones in there that deserve to be on the list.

Well, we’ve learned something important here. And that is that even if a single movie exists that everybody can agree on, there’s no way we’d want to sit down and watch that movie with everybody else on the Internet.

Veto the Accidental Tourist, the Bad Lieutenant – Port of Call, New Orleans, Beverly Hills Cop, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Blast of Silence (1961), Coming To America, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Cool Runnings, the Friends of Eddie Coyle, Kiss of the Spider Woman, the Limey, Little Big Man, the Lonely Guy (1984), Once Upon A Time In America, Only the Lonely, Pleasantville, Punch-Drunk Love, Rashomon, Richard III (1995), Roxanne (1987), Smoke (1995), Tin Men, 24 Hour Party People, Wall Street (1987), World’s Greatest Dad (2009)
