La La Land has been my reflexive least-favorite Oscar-bait film because (a) it’s a type of movie I typically don’t enjoy and (b) it has a name so annoying it makes my skin crawl. There was no chance of seeing it in the theater because I’m not going to say “Tickets for La La Land, please,” because I have to live with myself afterward. And, of course, Hollywood loves nothing more than mediocre movies about itself, so whatever virtues it may have are going to be magnified for the Academy. It’s not an effect I enjoy observing, so I’ll be actively ignoring this year’s shenanigans (as if Jimmy Kimmel weren’t enough to make me watch a test pattern all night).

It would still be hysterical if Viola Davis won an Oscar the same year Suicide Squad came out and some future generation misreads the information and spends several sleepless nights trying to figure out how that film won an Oscar.

Only point of contention I would take would be foreign language film — everyone I know who’s see Toni Erdmann loved it in that disproportionately La-La-Land-esque-but-even-less-discernable-dialogue fashion. But maybe your buzz is more tied into the Academy (and you’re right about Old White Folk protagonists). It would be a tiny victory for me if Erdmann won, because I have a feeling the rest of the night is going to be more La-La-ing than a weekend marathon of Smurfs episodes.

Turns out sexual harassment isn’t enough to prevent a Best Actor win!

Well, I skipped it. Watching paint dry is more appealing than watching an awards show.

And Suicide Squad did win for Best Make-Up, just to add to the confusion.

Reading this post after actually watching the awards ceremony makes me glad I hadn’t read it before. The best way to read this is to laugh at how you got most of it exactly backwards–due to your expectation that the Academy disagreed with you on your major points instead of agreeing with you.

You’re the mainstream now, Chris. How does it feel?

“Turns out sexual harassment isn’t enough to prevent a Best Actor win!”

Dude Roman Polanski won after raping a 13 year old this is a step up

Love the “You’re the mainstream now, Chris” philippos, my kudos.
I still think Disney should’ve nominated You’re Welcome, if only because the Rock pseudo-singing at the Oscars while in full Maui regalia would have made my year…

Is this blog finally dead? If so, I am a sand random Internet person. I will miss it.

Sad. Not sand. I do not ride single file to hide my number.

Feels closer to “Theoretically Annual” than I was hoping!

Guess we’ll never get to the results from “give me 5 songs you want me to hear and I’ll talk about them”

So, uh, should I send flowers in memory of this blog?

I can’t believe Chris had a heart attack when Moonlight won.

If you want to hear MGK rant about the exploitative, needless consumption and vaguely offensive comments of others while also showing off his own exploitative, needless consumption (which is okay, because it’s nerdy) and vaguely offensive comments (his mocking of names or habits can’t be offensive, because he’s Part of the Solution), his Twitter is your only option these days.
