Spider-Man: The Musical
I am not joking. Spider-Man: The Musical. It’s coming to Broadway.
If that’s not crazy already, get this: it’s being directed by Julie Taymor (The Lion King, Across the Universe, Titus) and scored by Bono and The Edge (U2, being self-righteous douchebags).
Producers are holding an open casting call for the roles of Peter Parker, Mary Jane, and a mysterious “Principal Woman”. The Principal Woman should be “female, 25-35 years old [with] amazing rock vocals. Think Sinead O’Connor with a Middle Eastern/Bulgarian/Greek twist. Foreign, world music types are great, foreign accents are great.”
Okay, Spidey fans: with this description in mind, who is the female villain in the Spider-Man musical? Discuss.

Will shy Peter Parker ever confess his love for the popular Mary Jane? Does he have time, before Spiderman is done in by the vicious, voracious, voluptuous Vulture?
Yeah, I said Vulture. The Voluptuous Vulture.
July 15th, 2008 la 9:33 pm
The New Kraven?
July 15th, 2008 la 9:39 pm
Female villain? It could be the Black Cat, or if they want someone vaguely european, it could be Silver Sable.
Though if she needs to be bald (the Sinead comment) then it’s the vulture all the way.

Nope, new villain. There was an article about this last year, with additional mention that there would be a “fanboy chorus” consisting of three nerds who sing Spider-Man’s tales. Truth!

The female villain in the new Spider-Man musical is Julie Taymor.

Found it, on the same site no less: http://www.playbill.com/news/article/107378.html
“…the character Arachne (”female, 20-35 years old, any ethnicity”) is described as “a beautiful, boastful young woman turned into a spider for her hubris and lack of respect for the gods. She subsequently appears to Peter Parker and the audience as in turn a powerful spider-woman who comes from another time to inspire Peter; an otherworldly lover; a bride; a terrifying (and sexy) dark goddess of vengeance; a dance partner in a charged and violent spiders dance of death; and, finally, a lonely, fragile young woman.”
Um…
I leave this one to you, blogger!

Yep. I’ll leave this one to you, blogger.

I was sure it was going to be Irina Spalko.

Talia al Ghul?

Musical about Spider-man, you say? Eh, it’s been done.

Admittedly, I’m not sure this was ever performed live, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

Why “self-righteous douchebags”? Just for doing this, or is your hatred more deep-rooted?
July 15th, 2008 la 11:44 pm
I like U2, but Bono does come off as a bit if a self-righteous douchebag.

Definitely deep-rooted. Bono certainly comes off as a bit of a self-righteous douchebag, and how can anyone take a person named “The Edge” seriously?
Also, let’s not kid ourselves. U2 hasn’t put out a good album in 15 years.
July 16th, 2008 la 12:24 am
As long as it’s better than this, then there’s nothing to worry about.
July 16th, 2008 la 12:34 am
@Mojo: I took the Sinead O’Connor comment to refer more to the vocals than the look (bald). And I was going to wager on Black Cat, too; I could see her being vaguely Joan Jett-ish, but more emo.
(man, if we were on the Well, somebody would totally have pseuded that)

Female villain.. Solid money is on The Black Cat. During the spider-clone fiasco there was a female Doctor Octopus, but since Broadway productions actually try to do something worthwhile, I doubt this is the case.
Unless the principal woman they’re talking about is Aunt May.
July 16th, 2008 la 2:14 am
I’ve heard the soundtrack to this. It’s not bad, just not amazing.

So they want somebody who sounds like they’re either from some part of Europe or perhaps Eurasia…
I submit the following crackpot guesses, even though these are not women traditionally associated with Spidey:
-Elektra (Greek descent on Earth 616, character could be native of Greece in the musical)
-Black Widow (Russian, also has spider-themed name)
July 16th, 2008 la 2:29 am
This can only end in tragedy.
And I don’t mean one on stage, either.
July 16th, 2008 la 3:06 am
Bono, Mother Jones Magazine, 1989:
“I don’t know why, but we always had this belief that there was something sacred about our music, that it was almost holy.”
If that doesn’t say self-righteous douchebag, I don’t know what does (other than, I guess, wearing a giant neon sign saying “I’M BONO FROM U2!”).
July 16th, 2008 la 3:38 am
Hey Edge is a great wrestler, a pioneer in the field of the TLC match and makes for a great heel. I think he can make for a great ‘face as well but I’m somewhat alone in…
Oh.
You mean THE Edge the guitar dude. I got nothing on him…
Also is Taymor the director of Titus the tv show MGK is currently showcasing or Titus the crazy ass movie version of Titus Andronicus with Anthony Hopkins?
July 16th, 2008 la 3:40 am
I think Silver Sable is the most feminist representation of a woman in Spidey’s life who I would think of off the top of my head. I mean, she’s intelligent, she can fight, she isn’t a ‘love interest’ nor a ‘femme fatale’, she doesn’t get kidnapped or held for hostage by some supervillain…
July 16th, 2008 la 5:43 am
According to imdb, LurkerWithout, it’s the latter.
July 16th, 2008 la 8:13 am
From that description, I’m guessing Wonder Woman.
July 16th, 2008 la 9:58 am
Honestly I’d much rather see Hellboy the musical. As far as the Marvel universe goes I’d rather see Dr. Strange as a musical.
July 16th, 2008 la 10:20 am
Well, at least it will be better than 3 Dev Adam.
July 16th, 2008 la 10:39 am
It’s a new villainess created solely for the musical. Fitting in with Stracynski’s totem theory, her codename is “The Cougar”.
July 16th, 2008 la 10:46 am
I think for a female villian named “The Cougar” it would require her to have a “3 pack a day” smokers voice.
July 16th, 2008 la 12:41 pm
Like Dr. Girlfriend, or as she’s known now, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch.
I agree Doctor Strange fits musical theater.
The Edge did a good theme song for that mediocre The Batman cartoon. It was eventually changed to something else.
July 16th, 2008 la 5:28 pm
I don’t think The Batman was mediocre, it just had shoes that even Galactus would find a bajillion sizes too large to fill.
July 17th, 2008 la 12:21 pm
I dunno about “self-righteous douchebag”, but naming yourself Bono Vox (’excellent voice’) certainly displays a degree of hubris / arrogance. To be fair though, he does have an excellent voice, even if I don’t like a lot of their music (I still don’t think they’ve topped Pride).
On the other hand, while his preachiness does get on my nerves at times, at least he is trying to use all that money and prestiege to do something worthwhile. I mean, it’s not like I get access to the President to convince him we should increase aid to Africe… I don’t really like the guy, but he does get a degree of respect from me.
July 17th, 2008 la 12:42 pm
Apparently that nickname was given to him by someone else, atleast that’s what the wikipedia profile says about him. Though, with the amount of attention Bono has had over all these years it doesn’t suprise me that the space in his ass where his head fits has become a parallel universe of it’s own.
July 17th, 2008 la 3:34 pm
South Park pointed out that Bono does a lot of good but still comes across as a piece of crap, which is a sentiment I can agree with. Is it any wonder that he was a person of the year with Bill and Melinda Gates? (I have nothing against Melinda, mind you.)
July 18th, 2008 la 10:48 am
Yes… It was a really bad year…
July 23rd, 2008 la 8:49 pm
consumerism is the villain
