I agree that there needs to be a Doctor Who one... except I'd change the "Not Nerdy" category to "has never heard of Doctor Who, unless they're British". Sadly, nobody in the US has ever heard of it. It's depressing.

While I agree on the overall premise, that nerdiness is being too widely misapplied as a personality trait, your examples are way off. Most of what you put here applies to geeks, not nerds. Nerdiness implies intelligence, whereas geekniess simply implies a somewhat inordinate obsession with something. Thus, you could be a Desperate Housewives geek, but that would in no way make you a nerd. Likewise you could be a Batman geek, but also be dumb as a box of rocks, in which case, no nerdiness. The only example that fits the bill is the last one, and even that you botched, since I know way more nerds that use Macs than do Windows. Windows is the ubiquitous OS that everyone and their grandma uses. Most people know how to do more than email with it. I'd still put it under "Knowing the actual reasons Windows sucks", but it certainly is more nerdy than someone knowing how to do more than email with Windows. The rest of your examples are all geeky things. Here's a quick way to tell if it is a geek-trait or a nerd-trait, do you have to have a degree in it? No? Then it's geek-related. Pop-culture is the realm of the geek. Academia is the realm of the nerd. The two do blend, and often nerds are geek and geeks are nerds, but the semantic differences are there.

BATMAN: I very nearly rated Really Nerdy for a project I have in the works, even though it's like... crossover AU and pretty OOC seeing as how the two things I'm working with only have a few things in common and I'm dissolving one continuity into the other and combining characters. Can I get "downloaded The Dark Knight while it was still in theaters becase Oh My God This Movie Is Long" points?

H.P. LOVECRAFT: Slightly Nerdy. I defend the "Kthu-loo" pronunciation. It's like saying the last name Nguyen, only doing it right.

NERD TELEVISION: Why aren't Firefly and the Sarah Connor Chronicles on this list?

STAR TREK: Re: TNG = Not Nerdy-- what if it was a formative experience for me, and, as a tot I both recognized that Geordi was doing Reading Rainbow and that Professor Xavier from X-Men TAS was Jean-Luc Picard and Cyclops would be better if he was just Geordi like in the other show? What then? Plus, I have the X-Men/TNG crossover book "Planet X"... on my cell phone.

LotR: Fairly Nerdy, but I think I get extra points for watching the cartoon of The Hobbit.

My contributions:

MOVIES:
Not Nerdy: Fullscreen Standard DVD. Knowing who's up for an Oscar this year.
Slightly Nerdy: Refusing to buy anything but Widescreen releases. Watching extras beyond the gag reel and deleted scenes. Knowing who should win an Oscar this year; having seen all the Oscar-nominated movies instead of just saying you have.
Fairly Nerdy: Only buying special edition DVD sets with the Extras discs. Knowing who will win an Oscar this year and why, despite others deserving it, because of a knowledge of Hollywood politics. Knowing that "Hollywood politics" is a redundant statement.
Nerdy: Buying multiple copies of the same movie(s) because it's been released again with more extras!/Waiting in line at 3AM to get the extra-special first-edition release of a movie with all the extras. Watching the whole movie with the commentary on. Movie posters, including ones you got from the movie theater itself.
Really Nerdy: Buying multiple copies of the same movie so that you have one to watch and one to keep pristine. Having the actual DVD/BR signed. Requiring multiple pieces of furniture to hold your movie collection. Movie memorabilia other than standard-issue mass-market/movie theater posters and action figures; for example, the "frosted glass" version of The Dark Knight poster, animation cels, pieces of film, music boxes.
Dangerously Nerdy: Having a home theater set up with a projector instead of a TV. Restoring old films yourself. Any movie props or costumes that you own (bonus points if you wear them). Any tie-ins that you own given to the crew of a movie (specific t-shirts, hats, pins, etc.) even though you weren't involved in the movie. Contacting anybody involved with a film either to protest, recommend, or congratulate over something and/or ask for pointers in getting into the business. Blatant fanmail to a non-actor/director. Working in and/or hoping to work in the movies in a non-glamorous job (ie not writer, producer, director, actor).

ANY FANDOM:
Dangerously Nerdy Over 9000: Creating a meme, especially one that's not fucking annoying.

ANY FANDOM:
Dangerously Nerdy Sue: After creating a fan-based work, you either cosplay as your original design or original character, or successfully sell merchandise around your fanart, fan-comic, etc. Bonus points if the work is actually good. Mega bonus points if people recognize you.
Stratospherically Nerdy Sue: Dressing as someone else's fan-made character/design, especially if recognized or going to meet the creator (like at a convention).

NERDY CARTOONS
Not Nerdy: "New" cartoons: Familiarity with/casually watching Batman the Brave & the Bold, X-Men Evolution, Spectacular Spider Man, etc. These cartoons being your main or only motivation for being a fan of a title, despite success in other media (comics, movies, old cartoons, radio shows.) Preferring the cartoons to this other media.
Slightly Nerdy: Actually getting all the in-jokes in the "new" cartoons (including cameos, shoutouts, characters who don't normally get much air time) & watching them faithfully. Comparing and constrasting new and old interpretations of characters and plot within the shows. Fanfiction that only references "new" cartoon continuity.
Fairly Nerdy: Keeping track of voice actors in the cartoons and making jokes about their work in other media (bonus points for other non-cartoon nerd media). Knowing and recognizing shoutouts to and quotes from old cartoons outside of the standard collective pop culture consciousness (the Hulk, Spider-Man, at this point Wolverine); ie "BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRDMAN!" the episode of X-Men Evo where a guitar riff from the X-Men TAS theme was played in the opening, any jokes in the director or cast commentary because nerds watch that. Knowing and singing along with theme songs/theme music. Bonus points for air guitar.
Nerdy: Knowing about "Iron Man" before the live action movie came out soley from the '60s or '90s cartoons. Remembering/being nostalgic for "old cartoons" not including Disney (Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, Birdman before "Attorney at Law"). Excommunicating seasons or arcs of a cartoon. (I'm looking at you Goliath Chronicles.) Having deliberately watched cartoon spinoffs from non-cartoon nerdy media (Star Trek TAS). Fanfiction referencing alternate/older continuities of the same title. Downloading or buying a cartoon before it's available in the country you're in, even if it's in another language, and even if you don't know that language (not including anime-- this is more "I can't believe the Latin American release is a year ahead of us").
Really Nerdy: Being nostalgic despite being too young to remember those old cartoons. Owning on any format other than Laserdisc/VHS/Betamax cartoons you hold near and dear to you, including on your hard drive. Setting your DVR or waking up at odd times to watch shows when they are rerun if they aren't available on DVD. Bonus points if they are really obscure or hard-to-get cartoons to begin with (Namor the Submariner, Thor, the Herculoids, Frazetta's "Fire and Ice".) Petitioning for a show to be remastered and released on DVD/BR. Any AMVs, whether you're watching them or making them. Being a part of a group to swap files/DVDs and discuss the show, online or physically.
Dangerously Nerdy: Owning costumes related to the cartoons. Making costumes related to the cartoons. Obsessively collecting all the toys that go along with the cartoons, even if they cost a million retard dollars and you keep them in pristine condition and you have the complete set. Any convention involvement specifically related to a cartoon. Mondo nerd points if this is a convention specifically for that cartoon. Any "Rocky Horror Picture Show" style synchronized audience participation, especially IN PUBLIC.

I was going to say what J. Carter Wood said up there but he totally beat me to it.

I'm not sure that reading Lovecraft is nerdier than playing the pen and paper RPG based on his work.

For the most part though, this is a fairly right-on, hilarious list.

Okay, so what's the difference between a nerd, a geek, and a freak? I have been called all three by supposedly normal people, but apparently I don't truly qualify as a nerd.

The difference between being 'Obsessed' and being 'Nerdy' have become confused. 'Nerd' is a culture that encapsulates a large amount of activities and obsessions. Some inculsions are undeniable such as RPGs, Graphic Novels/Comics, SciFi, High Fantasy etc some are not. Mainstream television is not. Knowing all the facts about desperate housewives makes you no more or less a nerd than knowing all the facts about a sports team. This metaphor does break down in that if you go to a Con dressed as a Dangerous House Wives character you are nerdy whilst if you go to a ball game dressed in a sports uniform you are just a dedicated fan, but the point is that there is a divide. Being a member of a culture like this is decided on one thing. If you are accepted by other members of the culture as being part of the culture then you are a part of the culture. If goths accept you as a goth then you are, if the aristocracy accepts you as an aristocrat then you are and if Nerds accept you as a nerd, then you are, but please people dont go claiming membership if you wont adhere to our club rules.

Beyond-Hope Nerdy: Hearing that title and immediately thinking of Miyamoto Musashi. And then remembering the naming gag from Pokemon by association and actually finding it sort of clever.
