I thought I was keeping up with Canadian politics, but I’m totally lost. I will also confess that I’ve been following our own clusterfuck of a political mess in the US far more closely than I’ve been watching Canada these last couple of weeks. What’s going on? What’s this in reference to? What’s this about Harper paying people to pave driveways?

Harper’s federal government is running a deficit in order to provide economic stimulus, but they’re essentially doing it in the silliest way you can imagine, taking the concept of “throwing money where it will be spent in a hurry” as literally as humanly possible in this year’s budget.

No serious infrastructure investment, no environmental upgrading, etc.

I totally just wrote about this.

We need an Ontariorioan here to explain this.

It’s pretty straight forward. Rae was the head guy in Ontario during some tough economic times, and he took a lot of flak for running a deficit. Now Harper’s the one running the deficit, and it’s Harper’s turn to take flak for it.

Rae took over from Harris, right? And inheritted a cluster****?

For those not from Ontario – “Rae Days” is the google term you want, to tell you just about everything you need to know about the context for this.

No, Harris took over from Rae.

Z- No, Rae lucked in to an Ontario horrifically pissed off at both the Tories and the Liberals, and walked into leadership just as the early ’90s recession hit.

That was nice. A bit too obscure, and smacking of privelege, for many Ontarians who still use “Rae days” as a public servant’s political epithet, but nice. As put by several professionals while examining the budget: “This is a joke. It has to be a joke.”
