Taking a look at the comic on the front page, I don’t see anything like a “Downs patient” or a “terrible hairdo” or “empty eyes.” This page actually looks pretty good.

Now, if you wanted to make a reasonable criticism, you could point out how nearly all the pages in the last chapter have gone unshaded.

I should clarify–I don’t have intense hatred for Megatokyo. I tried reading it, I thought it was dull and not worth my time, and I gave up reading it because I had better things to do. Really, this thread is the most thought I’ve given Megatokyo since I finished reading the collection I bought.

My problem with MegaTokyo – just to clear it up – is that it is completely mediocre in every way imaginable an Fred is doing nothing about it. I’m someone who went to art school. I worked my ass off for years to reach a level in work where I don’t feel guilty asking money for it — and I’m still studying even now because I know I’m not that great. It just boggles my mind that Fred is completely OK with selling that abomination. It’s not about the money, it’s about respect.

Let’s face it, there’s no way he can look at his characters and not notice that they are all downs patients with terrible hairdos and empty, dead eyes. In all these years, he never bothered to take even a slice of his profit, even a small percentage of his money, to actually learn how to draw.

I find that to be greatly disrespectful to his readers. Just look at Penny Arcade and you’ll see what I mean. That’s a guy taking his work seriously. Fred? Fred is just seeing how much money he can squeeze out of people before they notice how completely terrible he is.

Sorry for the lengthy reply. I just wanted to clear that up.

Alright, I’ll be honest: I /like/ Megatokyo; I honestly enjoy it. Yes, I realize it’s not actually manga, its melodramatic and I don’t take it seriously, but it’s still fun. The way I see it, its ok to enjoy something that sucks as long as you realize it does. Why all the intense hatred?

The thing about Megatokyo that really saddens me is that, underneath all the pedophilia and terrible art, there’s actually the seed of a genuinely interesting story there. Treating retired singers and actresses as “unexploded ordnance,” capable of manipulating emotions on a mass scale? That’s actually almost cool.

Of course, to get there you have to get through the aforementioned terrible art. Seriously, the girls all have the exact same face so the only way to tell them apart is by their haircuts and there are only six of those

In a moment of optimism, I bought the first volume of Megatokyo instead of reading it on the website. I recall describing it as “aggressively mediocre, with nice art.”

I felt silly for having paid money for it. But not as much as I did over buying the first two Anita Blake books at once because they were short and cheap and highly recommended.

A forum I visit has the most annoying, asinine, unfunny emoticons. Even people I otherwise would listen to and respect use them, and it makes every post seem ten times less intelligent.

I used Adblock to make them not show up anymore. (Similar to what Z mentioned.) My enjoyment of visiting this forum has increased appropriately.

Felt like mentioning it.

You can basically do the blunt force version of this with adblock (block a URL), just like you can get rid of the Flickr invisible overlay with it.

No dice on kill-filing someone net-wide, though.

I remember giving his comic a chance back in college, when my anime-fandom was at its highest. But even then, I knew anyone who called the creator of Love Hina a “genius” was irredeemably full of shit.

Somehow it doesn’t seem so farfetched… a script that forces a 404 whenever a particular url, considering some wildcards, is requested… And hide related material via keywords…
