While it certainly doesn't mean I have to be happy about it, it seems that with the framework of the arguments in the case, the supreme court had not other option. Unless the anti-Prop 8 guys were ready to pull out the 14th Amendment (which would be inadvisable at this point), there wasn't much wiggle room.
