Nathan was warned last week that he needed to connect with the audience. Adam said specifically that when other contestants are talking about helping underprivileged children and he yammers on about seadooing it doesn’t come across well. I read all the “family” tears as a blatant, poorly executed stab at seeming vulnerable and sensitive.

Bleah. He’s just too young emotionally to be on the show I think.

I was impressed by how much quickstep there was in that quickstep routine. Normally there’s like, ages of swing and Charleston and vamping and fake lindy and maybe one line of closed hold in the middle of all the crap, but there was a lot of actual ballroom there! Pity the dancing didn’t live up to it, especially near the end.

Did anyone else notice that Nathan seemed near tears (if not in tears) most of the night? Or that whenever he would smile, he’d suddenly seem to remember something and get serious again? He also seemed to be muttering “thank you” to Kathryn under his breath while hugging here and talking about how he owed everything to his parents. Did Kathryn perhaps lay down the law and knock some much needed maturity into him?! Did his parents call and give him a serious lecture?!

His attitude was so markedly different this week that one wonders…

The rhumba, OTOH, was rendered cartoonish by Nathan’s attempt at “smoulder”, which was overbearing and crude–it reminded me of Dominic doing that half-assed paso doble immediately after he got separated from Courtney, looking like some weird Bugs Bunny version of a matador.

Was it just me, or did that Noelle/Ryan “hip-hop” almost approach So You Think You Can Dance Canada levels of offhand filthiness? I mean, compared to U.S.‘s usual smirky Disney version of “sexiness”.

See, here’s the thing about Nigel. There are worse judges in reality TV. Everyone on American Idol is worse. But American Idol is a joke. Talented performers do not go on American Idol. Whereas SYTYCD has a number of very talented performers, and is for the most part a fairly quality show. So Nigel sticks out as being even worse, simply because he’s so out-of-place.

It doesn’t help that he’s a complete moron.

(I’ve never actually seen this show, just followed your commentary of it. I know nothing about dance).
