I really don’t like changing from Top 20 to Top 10 plus 10 all-stars. It makes it too much like DWTS and pros.
SYTYCD has always been my favorite dance show, partly because of being able to see so many styles, often fused in unexpected ways. Now each all-star will come with a style, so I guess we can say goodbye to Bollywood and other neat stuff, except for an occasional group experiment.
Another big favorite part has been rooting for unknowns and seeing them grow. Seeing a couple growing together for the first weeks has been neat, too, but apparently that will also be gone.
SYTYCDWTS can say that only the contestant will be judged, not the all-star, but I strongly suspect that nostalgic glows for Benji, Travis, Sabra, Joshua, etc., will cover their lucky partners.
Yay for the occasional break from Mary Murphy; it will be entertaining to see Mia some more.
Bottom line: It was a mistake to cram together a summer season and a fall season. If these changes are meant to make up for the fall in ratings, they’re going in the wrong direction, as far as I’m concerned.

I noticed this on Shankman’s twitter first, and thought he was joking. Now I’ve become resigned to the fact that yelling, “This is a BAD IDEA,” isn’t going to help.

I read this as “we can now extend each season an additional 4-5 episodes with a nominal increase in production cost and quality of product be damned”.

I read this as “we aren’t confident we can make new stars so we’re going to lean on the old ones.” But I’m cynical.
