Unfortunately for Canadians, this means that the Harper-led government apparently wants Canada to be worse than New Jersey.

The justification given is not that the death penalty is wrong, but that the trial procedures aren’t sufficient enough to ensure that innocent people aren’t executed.

It seems to me that maybe the proper remedy is not to sentence the innocent to life in New Jersey, but rather to fix the procedures that are supposedly convicting innocent people.

You can never make the system perfect, though. Wrongful imprisonment can at least be redressed to a slight degree by letting the person go and maybe giving them some financial compensation, but the death penalty is by nature irreversible.

It’s better that 100 men go free than that 1 man spend life in New Jersey.

More like trial procedures CAN’T be sufficient enough, I think is their argument.
