I hope all of the Democrats who have been saying it’s less of a crisis if McCain is the Republican nominee because at least he’s kind of moderate watch this video. Because, seriously, JOKING about bombing Iran by way of a Beach Boys song? Holy crap, that borders on plain ol’ CRAZY!
I don’t see anything particularly indicative in a joke, although it’s maybe not a good thing for a statesman to do while in office.
McCain is a conservative with a maverick streak, that is, that he agrees with the party on most issues, but where he doesn’t (on immigration, say), he goes with what he feels rather than trying to conform to their positions.
And that, my friends, is the power of a good marketing campaign. McCain = maverick (and vice versa) in the ears of America, whether it means a damn thing or not.
Ah, yes, good old John “Don’t Mention the Keating Five” “Maverick” McCain. John “Gay Sweaters” “Maverick” McCain. John “Maverick” McCain, who BOLDLY WENT FORTH and took the UNHEARD OF stance within today’s Republican party that torture is wrong.
Even if I weren’t convinced that the creature we know of as John “Maverick” McCain died about six months back and is in fact an intern wearing his preserved hide, I think the fact that the Republican party considers someone a maverick if they are opposed to torture is a perfectly good reason to vote Democrat.
Here’s how things stand in the GOP race right now. Freedom Is Slavery has dropped out, Ignorance Is Strength has promised to stay in because he refuses to understand math, but War Is Peace is the frontrunner.
I hate to be reductionist, but that’s all you need to understand.
