All of these only work if you have a modest number of books. Considering that we have over 2,000 books and the collection continues to grow by around 100 books per year, only wall-to-wall shelves as tall as we can find will do… although the rafter idea may come in handy in a few years when we start running out of shelf space.
I am not ashamed to admit that when I was in elementary school I just made the edge of my bed that was against the wall an extension of my bookshelf, which made my bed tiny and uncomfortable, but also really awesome for reading in. (This is sad.)
NERDINESS: When I read Samus’s comment about the cave bookshelf I was all hopeful that it was a stone wall/cave with built in shelving (…a la “Snow White” starring Kristen Kreuk. What?). IRL I’d be afraid that baby would die with the bookshelf full up.
The bookshelf-to-go is impractical because everybody with vast quantities of books knows how godawful heavy they are, and I would kill that expanding bookshelf in about 5 minutes–but it reminds me of a bookshelf murphy bed that I saw (the bookshelf swiveled, and in the back of it was your standard murphy bed). Now you get all the functionality of a bed, all the shady drifter quality of it folding back into your wall, AND BOOKS!
As for the rest of the designs: if I want something cute ‘n’ clever or sassy or artistical on my walls I’ll bloody well paint them, but don’t you mess with function, punks! Except the rafter bookshelves. You will go along with my dream Beauty-and-the-Beast library veeerrrrry nicely. ….Wow, that was nerdy.
Surprisingly, MGK didn’t link to Instructables!! IT IS DONE. (If you didn’t know about Instructables already, it is as big a time-waster as TV Tropes & Idioms only it also gives you false hope and confidence in abilities you may not have.)

A lot of these seem like they may be rough on bindings.
If you’re freaked out by potential binding damage, you’re not going to buy Barbie shelves anyway.

Bookcase don’t shiv, mon.
Did anyone else read “Rafter Shelves” as “Raptor Shells” or was that just me?
I’m totally in love with the rafter shelves. Granted, I have obscenely high ceilings and am only three apples high, but still, love.
Do you own one book? Do you love seeing butterflies on occasion? If so, the Fairytale Bookshelf is just for you!
I took one look at the cave bookshelf and fell deeply in love.
Scans daily is on your blogroll. Yet it does not exist!
The inverted bookshelf may be functional, but its not practical. You’d have to add adjustable straps with velcro to make it truly practical.
I think I like the Opus best
