Has there ever been a news story as anticlimatic as the revelation that prisoner “suicides” at Guantanamo Bay were probably actually murders? Seriously, is anybody surprised by the idea that Guantanamo Bay had torturing going on at this point? The BBC had a guard tearfully request forgiveness from his former captives just last week, for crissake. All this story does is confirm what most people already knew; you can practically hear Fox News anchors practicing their “you have to torture a few eggs to make an omelet” speeches already, maybe with a side of “and if it’s so bad why hasn’t Obama shut it down yet?”
Of course, this puts that whole “committing suicide was an act of war” rhetoric that was flying around at the time in proper context. At the time I thought it was just stupid. I should have recognized overcompensation when I saw it.

I’m pretty sure the first blog post I read in the morning should be abotu how scientists are working tirelessly to make tinier, fluffier kittens, not about how pretty much it’s America’s fault everybody hates us because we think murdering prisoners is what all the cool kids are doing. Even if it is a big anti-surprise. No wonder there’s a British guy in the running to play Captain America.
Every time someone talks about the Bush administration I keep expecting it to turn out to be some kind of elaborate joke.
“So this guy suspends habeus corpus, tortures prisoners, invades two countries, and pretends to be a cowboy.” “Wow, that’s quite the show, what do you call it?” “The Aristocrats!”
Wake me when someone actually gets arrested for this shit. So far I’ve seen low ranking nobody Linda England brought up on charges and convicted, followed by dust in the wind.
I know Obama has a truly epic pile of steaming shit to clean up, and it’s going to take a heroic effort just to get us back to ’05 levels of “We’re all screwed!”. But it would just be nice if, for once, we could see Republicans get the Full Clinton for something other than sex in an airport bathroom.
The upper crust NEVER gets prosecuted, Zifnab. It’s one of the rules.
Doubly so if they have a capital R next to their name on C-SPAN.
