Well said, MGK, especially “we’re part of a goddamned society.”
Maybe you could allow the UP in as a tiny new province instead?
I will now never be able to hear Glen Beck’s name without thinking, “whiny-ass-titty-baby.”
Thank you. I mean that sincerely.
Guy in the comments section:
“Bird gives an “against” argument in that we should be good neighbors by subsidizing places like Timmins, and gives another “against” argument that we would be forced to pay transfer payments to subsidize places like Timmins, which would suck. So I think “For” gets the win here.”
Counterpoint?
I’m glad to see from the comments there that selfish and delusional idiocy isn’t just an American thing…
Well, I’m not Canadian, and I don’t know many of the details necessary for deciding an issue like this, but I do know some people in the rest of Ontario are in favour of the idea. In fact, I read a comment by somebody once (I don’t remember where I saw it, so don’t ask) that advocated kicking Toronto out of Canada altogether. Here in the US, I’ve heard people say the same thing about New York City or Los Angeles, so I think it’s just a common sentiment whenever one gargantuan city dominates the politics or culture of a country (or province). I really doubt if most people are serious when they suggest such a thing.
Samus: I think MGK’s point is more that we SHOULD be okay with Transfer Payments et al, and that creating a Province of Toronto would not, as proponents of the idea suggest, prevent all of Toronto’s money from vanishing off into the Hinterlands of Cochrane.
In this particular round of the debate, I think the whiny-ass-titty-baby is Murdoch and his ilk, not Toronto. He’s the one who started the bitching.
@Samus: The other guy’s “For” argument is “we should become a province so we don’t have to subsidize Timmins,” which I thought was something you got at Tim Horton’s, which shows what I know. But MGK’s counterarguments are “we should subsidize Timmins, it’s the right thing to do” and “even if we became our own province, we’d still subsidize Timmins, so there’s no gain in doing it,” respectively.
@Burke Thanks for the recap. I am totally lost in matters of Canadian provincial politics so your input makes my head swim much less.
Bwahahaha, Murdoch is from my town. It’s a really bizarre mix of old hippies and old rednecks, and I believe he is one of the latter.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…! Oh my God, that’s stupid. MGK, what is going on there in Toronto, is everyone all right? Did some large portion of the population suffer a recent head injury? I love the whole “hey guys, whaddaya think, should we become a Province” idea…yes, yes, make it a plebiscite, campaign for it, then take out ads in all the papers saying “ATTENTION ONTARIO AND R.O.C, WE ARE OFFICIALLY A PROVINCE NOW, WE VOTED ON IT AND EVERYTHING!” Good Christ, and I thought B.C. had some potent weed. Simply some weird wild stuff, here.
