Hmmm…Obviously these guys don’t want to sink the ship, since they’d get no loot if they did, so that explains why they didn’t fire everything they had at it. But it still leaves the question “Why just one ball of pitch?”
Depending on how long it’ll take to put the fire out, I wonder if perhaps they launched it to “paint their target”, make the ship easier to track. It’ll be leaving a trail of smoke for a while, after all, and depending on how clear the visibility is or isn’t that might make all the difference.
