Well, as seen on page 15, he basically served as a human blast shield so that the character whose actually gotten to speak some lines could survive being, you know, exploded and such.
He has served his purpose. If you desperately need to know more, his name was Mary-Ann, which is just further proof that it is good that he died, because that is a terrible name for a pirate.
