Single-sentence review of Moonrise Kingdom

Basically every Wes Anderson film is either “Yep, that sure was a Wes Anderson film!” or “yep – that sure was a Wes Anderson film” and this one happens to mostly merit the exclamation mark.

“Wes Anderson!” – Rushmore, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox

“Wes Anderson” – Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

(I can hear the peasants marching with their pitchforks and torches already when I put Tenenbaums in the second category, but screw ’em, I’m right. Ben Stiller’s near-pointless character alone justifies that placing. That having been said, I own all of Anderson’s films and even his relative failures are fascinating.)

I thought Tenenbaums deserves the exclamation point. More as it was a satire on celebrity, a parody of Salinger, and a commentary on fidelity.

I would swap Life Aquatic with Rushmore, myself, but I’m mostly just glad to find out that there was someone else (other than Wes Anderson, I would assume) who liked The Darjeeling Limited.

(Anderson may be the cinematic equivalent of Philip K. Dick. Everybody agrees Dick wrote ten of the greatest sci-fi novels ever but nobody can agree on which ten!)

The Darjeeling Limited was the first Wes Anderson film I ever saw, and it remains my least favorite. I hate every character in it.

Personally, I’d put “Fantastic Mr. Fox” in the second category. Mark Kermode summed up what, for me, was wrong with the film (during his quite positive review of Moonrise Kingdom): “It’s a kids movie made by adults, for adults, sort of looking down their noses at kids”.

(Mind you, he also hated Rushmore. I think buzz has the right of it, there.)

I’m definitely among those who’d put The Life Aquatic on the ! list, but I agree with The Royal Tenenbaums’ placing.

Personally, Royal Tenenbaums is an exclamation point, as it never fails to make me cry. Darjeeling Limited made me aprehensive to go see Moonrise Kingdom, as it sort of ‘lost me’ after loving or liking most of the other movies (Bottle Rockets I own, and I’ve watched, but can’t really remember much about it, and haven’t really rewatched like I’ve done with most of the others). I need to get around to seeing Mr. Fox. Moonrise Kingdom was basically what I hoped, and I’m glad I was able to actually find a theatre in town showing it.
