…thing that was awesome about 2008: “Propane Nightmares” by Pendulum.
The thing I like about this – well. Obviously it’s a great song, but on top of that…
See, when I originally went into film a long time ago, part of it was because I loved – and was good at – constructing trailers in my head. Part of that was giving a lot of thought to music, what a song was good for in terms of enhancing the visuals in any given trailer.
This song is fantastic for anything involving speed. (I was originally thinking “Fast and the Furious minus the emo boring parts.”) It’s got a driving pulse to it, and it’s upbeat, but there’s also a hint of desperation in it. And it’s heroic, very obviously so.
In short? If they ever make a Flash movie, this is the song to which they should cut the trailer. Just close your eyes, listen to it, and see him doing things at Ludicrous Speed, cutting back and forth between shots of him in super-slow-motion in a frozen world and shots of him in crazy-fast-motion outpacing everything. The song just works for the Flash.
The lyrics even work! “In a trail of fire I know we will be free again / In the end we will be one / In a trail of fire I’ll burn before you bury me / Set your sights for the sun.” TELL me that’s not Barry thinking about Iris.
Anyhow. Fan moment over. Discuss.

To be honest, the hook is too cheezy sounding for me, I’ll have to check out a higher res version to be sure. That said, a remix of it could easily work.
found a d&b remix on the tubes, and the cheeze has been made tasty.
Yeah, I agree with mdk.
I’m far from a sophisticated music consumer, but there’s something about this song that doesn’t draw me in. I even did as you asked and closed my eyes and tried to imagine a Flash trailer, and… nothing.
Maybe if it were faster paced or if the lyrics were tighter, I dunno. But a remix could definitely work.
Well, listen to Four Minutes by Madonna feat. Justin Timberlake and imagine a Flash trailer . . .
One thing you have to consider about Pendulum, which some people may not know, is that Pendulum is a live d&b act. As in they actually play d&b with instruments as opposed to turntables and synthesizers. This is a pretty low-quality recording of this track, but even the most high-quality recording can’t quite capture how amazing they are to watch live. Watching Pendulum live at the Kool Haus with a 20 foot wall of lights behind them was honestly one of the best concerts I’ve been to in a really long time. Also, MGK, you have awesome taste.
I think it would make a GREAT trailer, but then Im biased since I love Pendulum. That said, MGK needs to post more in the muzak tag, pretty much everything you talk about relating to music is awesome and exactly what I like. One thing I will say though is that I could NEVER find a decently recorded MP3 of that Audiosurf thing you posted a while back “DJ Fresh – Submarines”. Help?
Wow, Pendulum. How much I’ve loved them since I first heard Hold Your Colour some time ago. I’m always pleased to see others loving this dnb group.
Sorry, I just don’t see Flash.
0:00 – 0:23 is a mediocre latin intro
0:24 – 1:06 is the same mediocre latin intro with slow lyrics
1:06 and on sounds more like a medium difficulty Mega Man level (like right after Bubbleman on MM2).
For Flash, I would say something almost triumphant but not quite hard rock, with a relentless beat (no mediocre intro build-up, it has to be “GO!” from the word go) and maybe a splash of something unique – like a single oboe, muted in the background or an odd percussion instrument. Lyrics optional but they can’t be delivered slow – too much contrast.
Yeah, have to agree with plas, Pendulum are a great live act. They rocked the shit out of Brixton Accademy. In Silico doesn’t have the punch of Hold Your Color, but it still burrowed into my head and stayed there.
I agree 100% with Zenrage. I listened to it, and the only thing I could think of was “this sounds like a video game theme song.” I’m unimpressed.
Oh, I really like this. I want more of this. I do think the lyrics could be a bit more forceful, maybe, but this song is excellent for running/weights. Now, to find the MP3.
[…] stayed with me. MightyGodKing notes that a drum and base track- Propane Nightmares by Pendulum- would be good to use in a trailer for a Flash movie. My first thought on listening to the track was to disagree. Not to jump into comments and let the […]
