See, I have a problem with this:
The problem is that I know I’m going to be all “but wait, if the games don’t work when the bad guys aren’t there, do the bad guys ever get, like, time off? What if the game is on all the time?”
And I know the answer is “shut up,” and normally I shunt disbelief aside pretty easily. But this one seems to be niggling at me for some reason.

Ok, so how many villians did everyone recognize in the therapy session? I think I saw Dr Robotnik in there too.
Bowser, Zangief, M.Bison (or Vega if you like), Clyde, a ninja who might be Smoke or Sub-Zero, the rhino final boss from Altered Beast, Clyde the two-axe-wielding zombie from House of the Dead, the yellow robot might be a boss from Cyborg Justice.
Thanks for making me aware of this movie… looks really fun. 🙂
Discworld Death explanation.
They don’t have to be there in every game at every time. They just have to be present in a metaphysical sense, doing their jobs. If they abandon their post it leaves a bad-guy sized hole in all the games.
OK, I can tell it’s not Pixar, because I didn’t either love it or say “Oh, CarsM” as soon as I saw it, but it can’t be Dreamworks because there were no fart jokes in the trailer. I’m at a loss.
Man, Disney is using the Talking Heads in their soundtracks? And I thought they were so edgy…
Also, I agree with Murc. Otherwise, he’d have to be in tons of different arcades doing different stuff all at the same time.
No, it’s Pixar. And frankly, they’ve more than earned a little trust. They could show me a trailer that was Gilbert Gottfried reading the phone book and I would go to see the movie it was shilling for.
It’s not Pixar, it’s Disney Animation.
… huh. Okay, it would appear you are right, Kadin. There are a million web sites that I usually trust saying ‘Pixar’ but yeah, it looks like this is just Disney.
I apologize for the error.
They’re using the Talking Heads, but they’re using them badly. So that’s a good hallmark it’s not Pixar.
Ever since Pixar took over Disney animation, it’s essentially been Pixar. This’ll be lots of fun.
So, where did Dr. Wily go? He was in some of the earlier stills.
So after looking at the Trailer, does that mean Disney owns all these characters now ie Vega, orange ghost, etc?
The real question is why is game hopping even a thing if they don’t want characters going into other games?
When did Zangief go from playable character to Boss? I mean, M. Bison, yeah…but I remember vividly doing the spinning piledriver in my youth.
@Alan: No, Disney just got permission to use them; and in Capcom’s case at least they have existing ties due to Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Besides, what rights holder in their right mind would turn down Disney-caliber money?
@Raskolnikov: He was a member of Shadaloo in Street Fighter 1, and was the first boss I believe, but don’t quote me on that.
Man, I watched that trailer like 6 times yesterday, I was so delighted by it. Not even the presence of Sarah Silverman could dampen my enthusiasm. My hope is that this will be good enough to be for classic video games and Gen X-ers/90s kids (unless we lump those two together?) what Who Framed Roger Rabbit was for classic cartoons and the baby boomers. I don’t think it’ll quite measure up to the latter, but that’s the vibe I get from it. Incidentally, it’s being directed by a guy who’s been behind some of the best of The Simpsons and Futurama (he did “Marge vs. The Monorail”, for one, but his name escapes me).
Zangief was definitely not in Street Fighter. He was introduced in Street Fighter 2 as a non-boss character. The bosses were Balrog, Vega, Sagat (original boss of Street Fighter) and M. Bison.
Zangief was originally one of the “darker” of the original 8 fighters, but only due to his ties to Communism at the time, and not having a specific character motivation outside of proving he’s the best wrestler around. He’s never been an evil character by any means, and at this point he’s one of the most positive Street Fighter characters ever: no tortured past, really enthusiastic about competing without seeking to specifically hurt people, and all around a good sport. Sagat would have made a lot more sense there, because while he’s not “evil for evil’s sake” like Bison is, he’s never been heroic.
I intend to ignore all the programming knowledge I’ve acquired since PCs became a reality and just enjoy this film.
I believe the entire movie is set in a specific arcade. They have “time off” when the games aren’t being played, i.e. when the arcade shuts down for the night.
You’re entering a big error, MGK. Keep asking troublesome questions and you’ll end up on the Game Grid.
damanoid: Yeah, I did always wonder how TRON was supposed to work. Like, if the little dudes in the arcade game are actual people, then they gotta be piiiiiiissed at the time me and a friend spent like three dollars repeatedly forcing Cyclops in “X-Men Arcade” to jump into a pit because we got the giggles at the way he yelled “AAAAAAAAGH!” right before he fell.
PS they wanted a big scary huge dude, but if they’d used Bison(*) then people would have been screaming “RACIST BIGOTRY” at the thought of presenting a big scary huge black dude. Therefore, Zangief.
(*) who already had his name changed over the racism issue
Zangief’s not particularly scary-looking there, he’s more of a slightly friendly-looking muscle-bound oaf. He also looks oddly young to me.
And to be honest, I think he’s simply more distinct and interesting-looking than Balrog.
Incidentally, this is the first time I’ve ever heard anything about the Street Fighter 2 bosses getting their names swapped due to racism. I’ve always heard that it was to avoid possible legal action from Mike Tyson, which makes a lot more sense, cos their names don’t really relate to race.
@Prankster: Your comment just made me think of something. When there’s no human characters around, the non-human characters do pretty much whatever they want. Isn’t that the basic premise of all the Toy Story films?
Then again, I could be wrong comparing those 2 films.
Versaro, you’re absolutely right. Balrog’s Japanese name was “Mike Bison”, but they figured a boxer with that name, while obviously parodic, may prove legally troublesome. On top of that, they wanted to change the name of their main villain, because to American ears, ‘Vega’ doesn’t have the threatening sound they were after, but would rather be better for the semi-androgynous bullfighter-type. So Vega became M. Bison, Balrog became Vega, and Mike Bison became Balrog.
@Darkblade: Maybe gamehopping is supposed to only be for crossovers?
Also, wow – even that brief glimpse of the Jane Lynch character is flirting with the uncanny valley.
