That is only half the BJP slogan- the other half is “PS: Fuck everybody else who isn’t Hindi too”.

And in other good news, the Tamil Tigers have admitted defeat and conceded, without intervention from Canada.

Wow, good news! Excellent.

But I don’t think there’s many places to have a latte in South Dakota to boast about this knowledge.

Yes, but did they arrest Richard Gere or not?

Not only did they win, they won with a huge margin. Particularly in the world of Indian politics. The poll numbers in Uttar Pradesh were very nice to see. Add to that the Left completely falling apart and you have a really interesting government developing.

Plus the Tigers offering to stand down. I’d call it a good week in that neck of the woods.

Ah, but who’ll campaign to put professors of Vedic astrology in the major universities, now?

400 million people voted over the last month in India.

It gets mentioned a few pages into the major broadsheets, not at all in the tabloids, and gets a single post from most blogs I read.

A world-class economy, thousands of candidates, clear relevance to the West (will they back the nationalist party in face of economic uncertainty or go with the technocratic dynasty?), and just plain fascinating people, from Mayawati to the nutters of Shiv Sena.

God, I wish I knew more about it, because — and this is precisely the problem — I’ve used up all my knowledge about the election in the above two paragraphs.

You may not have been aware that there was an election in South Africa recently. And here’s the bad news: there is no good news! Mostly because the ANC, which stands for something that I believe translates to “fuck all white people everywhere,” won

I don’t think highly of Jacob Zuma at all, but as African political leaders go, he’s hardly the bottom of the well.

As for the ANC, they won because South Africa is still in the final stages of “the ANC should win because they were the party of liberation.” This happens everywhere; it takes about twenty years for the gloss to wear off. It took about the same time in India. Next election, etc.

Is that really true?

Or is this one of those things that get lost in all sorts of translations so bad that ultimately western righcist-wing circles just snap their priveleged jaws into it and reproduce the meme to well-meaning liberals dangling to the right, like “anything with black on the title is a black separatist extremist group who wishes to kill whitey”? ‘Cause, if it is, considering the context, damn we just went back way before the 90’s here, boys (please, no one say “it’s been more than 10 years, get over it”).

Indeed-y. Note also post-Civil War America (for the Republicans) and the dominance of the centre-right parties in France from 1958 to 1982 (out of dominant Gaullism after the chaos of the Fourth Republic).

The Democratic Alliance won more votes than ever before, COPE were always disliked, and the ANC lost a province previously held for the first time. Democracy lives in South Africa.

Of course not! How could it possibly be true?! Everybody knows evil only has one colour: lily white.

mgk: zuma certainly isn’t the worst african leader, but he is certainly far from the relatively sane people that are in power in most first world countries. also, people that vote anc generally do so because they believe that if the don’t apartheid will come back and this something they actively foster. so it is probably going to be a little more than 20 years before things get better
