Aw, I wouldn’t say The Blair Witch Project *sucked*. It’s more that it really only worked in a theatrical venue, and was entirely unsuited for home video.

There’s no doubt that it was a mediocre story (if it even rose to that level), but the performances were somewhat interesting, and the sound design — at least in a dark movie theater — was excellent. Sadly, that last part is the one that undoubtedly gets lost when someone sees it at home.

Hmmm… I never saw this, being somewhat put off by Tim Brayton’s review claiming that the thread through the movie is not so much “the power dynamic in the act of recording someone” as “look out men, because all women are devouring vampires“. Which sort of shot my enthusiasm.

I saw Blair Witch at home by myself before seeing it in a theatre with other people, and found it scarier at home.

‘Blair Witch’…that was one of those movies where I really wished I could see what other people were seeing. It was almost like it was casting a glamour; I know a lot of people who were completely immersed in the story to the point where they forgot they weren’t actually experiencing it, and they still rave about it decades later. But if you weren’t sucked in, it was just a bunch of obnoxious people wandering around the woods for 90 minutes, bitching at each other.

As for the other review, Zyzzyva, I can see that reviewer’s point as well. I could see a redemptive reading of this as a film about the way that the power to record, especially the power to record people who don’t know their actions are being preserved, lends itself to abuse, especially when it’s presented in the context of sex and intimacy…but the line between “insightful” and “offensive” is so fine for something in that vein that I’d hesitate to suggest that anyone who was offended was taking away the “wrong” meaning. It’s something that I think each person judges for themselves, and if that reviewer was offended, then it fell on the wrong side of that line for him, full stop.

I thought the main theme of it was ‘Be careful going down stairs’.
