The best part about that scene isn’t in this clip. John Spencer’s character gets caught in a political jam later on, and Bradley Whitford’s character goes above and beyond to try to help him out, and Spencer’s asks him why he’s doing it, and Whitford’s responds, “Nah, there’s this guy in a hole, ya see?”
After going back (again) to my West Wing dvds last night – I demand that next weeks clip come from the episode “He Shall, From Time To Time” – (in particular the “Have You got a best friend” bit with Mayor Harry Groener). Or the clip from the next episode, with Leo and the girl who blabbed his alcoholism to the conservatives.
I’m imagining the end of the Sarah Palin version being, “And so he just climbed outta that doggone hole all by himself, because he was a true American!”

I miss John Spencer.
One of my all time favorites, and rather timely today. Thank you. 🙂
Yes! The friday show that started friday shows! I want to see the paul revere knife next week MGK.
As a 26 year old heterosexual, I have no qualms admitting I had a little cry the first time I saw that scene. Even now its perfect.
One of the best episodes, that’s for sure.
John Spencer, you are missed. 🙁
I wish this would be an everyday occurrence – I could do with a West Wing clip every afternoon.
Thanks!
Try picturing Sarah Palin tell that guy in a hole story.

Damn that show was well-written.

In fact, Friday John Spencer would be fun
“Have you got a best friend?”
“Yes sir.”
“Is he smarter than you?”
“Yes sir.”
“Then he’s your chief of staff.”
I love that scene too.
