Me too. And I started taping them off MTV, and then Nickelodeon when *they* started showing it.
One of their reunion tours was also the first concert I ever went to.

I’m also saddened to think that had he passed a couple weeks earlier we might have all enjoyed Jennifer Hudson singing Daydream Believer…
It’s funny, I thought of the Monkees as a disposable bubblegum act for most of my life, and it’s only been in recent years that I’ve begun to appreciate how talented the Monkees were (by actually, y’know, listening to their music).
Apparently syringavulgaris and I are the same person. Who knew?

Yeah, in hindsight, the Monkees WERE a real group. They were just brought together in a really pre-packaged way. Once they were able to do their own thing – especially Dolenz, who showed off a love of blues/jazz/I-think-that’s-bebop rock, just listen to “Goin’ Down” and enjoy – they made artistically good/durable music. Pity was, they hated doing the campy show and when they finally got creative control their diverse interests – Nesmith’s country rock, Tork’s folk music, Dolenz’s bebop, Jones’ pure pop – they immediately split up into different studios with session musicians… :/
