Great analysis, Jim, but I couldn’t suppress the gutteral Ughhhh when you mentioned the Winter Soldier premise.

This is actually fantastic news for me, I really like Bucky and hopefully he’ll become the new USAagent at some point in the future.

Death of Ultimate Spiderman will at least *take*.

I do agree with you Jim, but I really don’t think anyone is expecting Thor to stay dead for all that long.

Probably the ultimate instance of one death overshadowing another is Crisis. Supergirl dies saving Superman AND the universe in a big double-sized issue, leaving the most indelible image associated with Crisis, used in ads that say, “The DC Universe Will Never Be The Same” and the world mourns.

The next issue, the Flash dies destroying a plot-device anti-matter cannon we didn’t even know about up to that point, with the Psycho Pirate as the only witness, and nobody else finds out until issue 12.

I’m not denigrating the Supergirl death (which I think is the finest “heroic sacrifice” deaths out there, as long as you remember it was kind of ripped off the final battle with Darkseid during the Great Darkness War in Legion… seriously, go read both issues again), but the Flash really got the short end of the stick.

I hadn’t even heard Thor died. Bucky’s death made more of an impact amongst the circles I travel in, because at least they mentioned it.

I thought MGK was the “unofficial” mascot of Rex. 😐
