Tintin: oil tycoon (you know you want it)

The porter of the last page is a black man with huge lips in my edition. Herge…

More people should finish speeches by saying “I have spoken!”

Tintin to Indians: I drink your milkshake! I drink it up!

OK, that last page is hilarious enough to make up for the blithering insanity of the previous however many.

Fancy dress is forbidden in town? What kind of police state is that city?

mygif

To be fair, Herge is an European, and those people have no concept of racism at all outside of hatred for Jews, Muslims, and Americans.

mygif

What I mean is that when they’re being racially insensitive, usually it’s unintentional.

As a European, i find that generalization offensive.

Random White kid with oil well: $5000
Indian Tribe with oil well: $25 bucks + scram
That part seems realistic enough.

(I come from Red Lake, where the governor had us draw the boundaries in pencil, had Bu-si-noss sign in ink,
then redrew the boundaries in ink. Over a hundred years of being bitter.)

“To be fair, Herge is an European, and those people have no concept of racism at all outside of hatred for Jews, Muslims, and Americans.”

That’s irony, right? As oppose to grotesquely offensive.

mygif

Is it possible that there are people in the world who are INTENTIONALLY racist? I’m not even sure how that would work. Quietus, you probably should have just kept your mouth shut.

mygif

And SpaceSquid got it one.

mygif

In one.

But climactic failures of grasping satire on the internet aside, I still think that you can’t assign a lot of malice on Herge’s part for racial insensitivity. His worldview is from a different time, and while ignorant, isn’t meant to be offensive. I hope. I recall reading that in The Blue Lotus, Herge had a lot of help getting the characterization of Chinese culture correct. Unfortunately, he ends up making the Japanese look really bad. Oh Herge, you 30′s Belgian, you.

Just checking. Mainly because satire is somewhat hard to read *sans* intonation. Of course, there’s a valid discussion to be had on how much leeway we should give to “racism from the past”, I just wanted to know what ground we were standing on.

Redskin City … Dan M. Snyder = “Bobby Smiles”?

Pat from Red Lake: In our bitterness, we share a soul bond. Accuracy in Comics at Fun-Time Square of Resentment, USA! (I’d be a little less bitter if I were eligible for free tuition at some state colleges, scholarships, etc. but unfortunately, I’m not a card-carrying Native. FAIL FAIL FAIL.)

Also, aren’t they in Chi-town? How the fuck did they get to a Blackfoot Reservation? With cacti? And children inexplicably called after the sling in which they are meant to be carried??

It’s interesting that, when Bobby Smiles curses, he evokes the names of various prisons.

Well, “interesting” perhaps isn’t the word. “Grotesque”, perhaps?
