I buy Elephantmen in issues, and started without ever reading Hip Flask, and I was able to follow along with the story, mostly due to the incredibly successful first issue. Except for the pirate issue by Joe Casey. That was just not good.

Haven’t read Elephantmen, but I got all choked up again reading of BMV. BMV is another thing that makes Toronto awesome.

Elephantmen is one of two comics I will buy the hardcovers for as soon as they’re on the shelf. There are characters in there that I love and those that I loathe, but I’ve never been bored (though I have been occasionally confused, for the reasons you’ve stated). The War Toys miniseries is out now, and the more recent issues are giving us more backstory on Mappo and the war. Great stuff.

Hi,

I’m the graphic designer and co-publisher of Hip Flask and Elephantmen. Thank you for both the incredibly kind words and the thoughtful criticism. We value both here at giant killer hippo army central.

I just wanted to point out that all of the Ladronn HIP FLASK comics are still available in plain old 3-5 buck comic book format, at comic shops as well as our website Comicrazy.com. So it’s not necessary to shell out for the oversize hardcovers just to read the story.
