John Cole is right: this AP commentary just screams out “why are you such an uppity Negro, Mr. Obama?”
The dictionary defines the word as an “offensive display of superiority or self-importance; overbearing pride.” Obama may not be offensive or overbearing, but he can be a bit too cocky for his own good.
As opposed to Hillary Clinton or John McCain, who are of course portraits of humility.
Yeesh.

Honestly, when I think cocky I think of George W. Bush, Albert Gonzales, and most of their immediate associates.
After watching Bush’ endorsement of John McCain, I came away with respect for McCain’s self-control. He might have a temper, but when he wants to he can keep it under wraps.
I think it’s worth noting that he’s getting this defense because he’s black. Is the “you can’t say anything bad about Obama because he’s black! if you do, you’re being a cryptoracist!” line you’re taking here really any better than the “you don’t like soldiers as much me! you’re unpatriotic!” line you took others to task for? There’s no argument here, just the “you’re a racist!” cudgel used to club down people who don’t agree with you.

Andrew: the ugly stereotype exists, and honestly, if there’s a word less apt to describe Obama’s general demeanour, it’s “arrogant.” I mean, come on – the guy is practically soft-spoken.
I agree with MGK, if there’s a reason to dislike the guy, then do so, but don’t be a social retard about it and pretend that promoting oneself in a presidential election is the same thing as being arrogant. After all, the guy IS running for the one position that is supposed to be reserved for the best and brightest this country has to offer. If Barack Obama doesn’t have a high opinion of himself, then he isn’t the right guy for the job.
The guy who wrote this article is a smarmy dick who obviously can’t find anything realistic to fault Obama on so he invented this “arrogant” crap as a pathetic attempt to not sound so pathetic.
