There’s also 07-343 Kennedy v. Louisiana (6/25/08). Basically, they ruled against the death penalty for child rapists.

McCain thinks they did the wrong thing, and I expect that of him because he’s a dick. But Obama thinks they did the wrong thing too. That surprised me. I’ve come to expect better from the guy, I’m sorry.

I agree with Ezra Klein on this.

It’s a sad fact but you’re not allowed to treat prisoners as human beings if you want a political career. Reagan did such a fantastic job of poisoning the well that even the slightest perception that a candidate is “soft on crime” can be enough to doom the campaign.

Which sucks mightily.

I’m by no means saying that the additions of Alito and Roberts have been good for the court. I’m disappointed that Kennedy has sided with those two, Scalia, and Thomas so often.

But when the SCOTUS rules the right way on something (when most of the time they’ve done the opposite) I hate to see the guy I plan to vote for tell them they did something bad.

The right’s been describing Obama as “the most liberal person in the Senate” and while that’s certainly an exaggeration (other people have pointed out that guys like Russ Feingold and Bernie Sanders fit that description better), I would fucking LOVE for a really liberal person to become the next President! I wouldn’t want him to act like the current jerkoff and act dismissive and contemptuous toward everybody on the other side of the aisle, as if their opinions didn’t matter, but I don’t want a moderate in office. I was against Hillary even before her campaign went negative precisely because I considered her too moderate.

Maybe I’m hoping for too much when I hope for Obama to be the exact opposite of George W. Bush in every way that matters. Maybe that’s unrealistic. Nonetheless, before his objection to this particular ruling I really thought he was that guy, that anti-Bush. Now I’m not sure any more and it’s extremely discouraging.

Sounds like you should have been a Kucinich supporter.

LOL, I would be if he’d won the nomination.

*Takes a moment to imagine the kind of strange-ass planet on which there might actually be a chance of that happening*

Wow, that’s the kind of world that would make Uatu do a spit-take if he ever saw it. And if he ever drank anything while Watching, for that matter.

I dropped a comment or two over at The Court. I find that several days later they’re still awaiting moderation. Did I inadvertently violate the terms of discourse?

Obama is the exact opposite of George Bush in every way that matters: He’s smart.

With the exception of the FISA bill and the trade-murder-for-rape business.

FSM I hope he’s not one of those compassionate types.
