I just finished Nation yesterday with, as happens with almost every Pratchett book, a lump in my throat, a tear in my eye and a smile on my face. When I first read it, I was a little disappointed that this was not another Discworld novel, but only until I got about four pages into it. By then, Pratchett’s essential humanity on the printed page overwhelmed me. I began to actually care for these characters. They came alive in my head.

God, I just. . . The idea of losing Terry Pratchett is horrible. His mind has shown us so many wonders. It is a terrible thing that the light that mind shone into the darkness is dimming.

Just a little off-topic, but I think Pratchett himself would probably assert that being made of stone isn’t necessarily equivocal to not showing emotion.

Well, you did it, you got me to donate to Alzheimer’s research. Every little bit helps, right?

Damn… you wrote almost word-for-word the review I’ve been meaning to write for the last few weeks…

I’ve been saying for years now that Pratchett needs to get away from the Discworld for a little while, since I felt it was starting to stagnate. Everything I’ve heard about Nation seems to confirm that, especially after the failure that was Making Money.

I met Pratchett in Memphis last year at one of his rare convention appearances. This was before he knew of his illness and I have to say he was a super celebrity. He hung out with clusters of fans, he would sign or anwser anything and he always had a moment for people. You have no idea how rare it is to have someone of Pratchett’s standing come up to people and surprise them and hang out. The man scolded us for downloading the Hogfather movie while smiling at us.

Exceptional words. Alas, I got distracted by a shot of Christina Aguilera’s breasts about half way through.

Thank you. I’ve been reluctant to pick Nation up since I heard it was a young adult novel. I love the Tiffany Aching and Johnny books, but feared this time he’d decided to simplify down to kids books because he wasn’t up to his usual quality.

I’m off to check out this book. How nice to know that it’s comparable in quality to my favorite City Watch book, “Night Watch”. Seriously – that book had pathos.
