“Did you have any formal art training?”

Did you really have to ask?

Spike Lee – “Have you had any professional training?”

Rob “The Bad Man” Liefield – No. But that’s okay I rip my artwork from other artists who have and then do line copies. So it’s just as good. I mean I’ve been doing it this way since way back in the 80’s when Vic Bridges and I would just redrawn John Byrne’s artwork and call it our own. It’s not like we traced it or anything.

SL – “So you created X-Force?”

RL – Yeah. I created all the characters in X-Force. Boom Boom was my idea but Jim Shooter stole it years before anyone had heard of me. Cannonball had been running around my head since before I was born. I know that’s how awesome I am. Warpath i will admit was actually created by some other guy, he worked on an X-book I think. But it was my idea to change his name to Warpath. Cause I role like that.

As you can guess my opinion of Liefield is slightly lower than how I feel about rapists and child molesters. I’ll leave it at that.

ARRRGH! The crotch shots make my eyes bleed. And he looks like his “creations”–widely-spaced eyes, small nose, weird proportions.

Wow. You know…Liefield’s on my Facebook friends list and I’ve long gotten a weird, queasy feeling from him beyond his admittedly right-wing politics. This helps explains a lot.

The 40 worst Rob Liefeld drawings ever according to Progressive Boink. As of 2007. Maybe he’s drawn something worse since then.

(Full disclosure: I actually liked his work on New Mutants when I was younger.)

Watching this with sad music in the background makes it unbearably tragic, for some reason.

My favorite Rob Liefeld anecdote:

A local comics store (sadly no longer with us) had done a signing recently of someone affiliated with “DeathMate” (if anyone remembers that particular piece of dreck.) It wasn’t one of the Image guys, it was one of the Valiant guys.

The owner of the store was chatting with me, and he said, “You know, I’d really like to get Rob Liefeld in here to do a signing.”

He paused, for comic effect, and then said, “And afterwards, I’d run him over in the parking lot. And the next time someone in the comics industry started acting like a total jackass, I’d send him a little picture of Rob Liefeld’s broken, twisted body and a note attached to it saying, ‘Hey, remember this guy?'”

I kind of gather that working in a comics store is a high-stress profession. 🙂
