I don’t know, I think you’re overstating things a bit with Canada, and I’m Canadian.

Maybe it’s just that it’s always compared to “The Star-Spangled Banner”, which unfortunately for us is an INSANELY good anthem.

We also need a singability index. On a 1-5 scale, I’ll give Canada, Eh?, a 4, because of the high bit in the last line. I’ll give the Star Spangled Banner a 2.

FWIW: France: 5 (if you know the words), UK, 3 (Second Stanza — Too high and squeaky)

I think we’ll just proceed on the understanding that the Canada score has been inverted. 59 is about right. (Seriously; Austria’s anthem is beautiful, stirring, layered and complex, and you’re scoring it under an anthem that could be played on a vuvuzela.)

Fun fact; if you live in a city where the only major sports franchise of any sort is an AHL team in the western conference, you end up hearing ‘O Canada’ and ‘The Star-Bangled Banner’ played back to back a LOT.

Yeah. You guys win. Also your anthem sounds awesome when remixed as a rock song, a la the South Park movie soundtrack.

Diego Ibarra:
That’s a bit easier. First you eliminate the simple Tri-colours. (Also: Poland, Indonesia)

Then you eliminate the modified tri-colours (Canada, Mexico…)

You are mostly left with two basic patterns. Stars and Stripes (USA, Chile, Cuba) and Union Jacks (UK, Aus, NZ, Caribean…)

What’s left? Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Brazil.

I’m curious as to whether you’ll go for UK or Scotland/England/Wales. Mostly because I really like Flower of Scotland, and am curious as to what you’ll make of it.

Of course, last Friday, I came to the conclusion that Uruguay has the best anthem in the world ever, to the extent it is now on my iPod. But I won’t spoil it. [Disclaimer: no affiliation with Uruguay in any sense.]

And mightybaldking, you miss out all the variations on crosses, either way — Sweden and Jamaica are far from variations of Union Jacks.

Also, Libya, Nepal and Japan are always left over. Because Libya is just a brilliant statement:
“We have to come up with a flag? OK, let’s have a green one.”
“What sort of green one? We need a design.”
“No, let’s just make it totally green. No one else has done this. That makes us easily identifiable pioneers of minimalism in flag design”.

Nepal, also went to the school of “flag design by eccentrics”, but in an utterly different way.

I forgot the Scandinavian crosses completely.
Jamaica is a variant of the Union Jack, but it is significantly different.

IMHO, the greatest flag in the world is Alberta. It just jumps out and says “This is Alberta! Hell Yeah!”

National Flags: Seychelles, Vanuatu or Zimbabwe

If we’re talking flags, Wales wins. No argument. Because there is a dragon on it, and that’s all that a flag needs really.

Also- Djibouti absolutely killed me.

Also, getting my opinion in now while I remember it- the English national anthem should be I Vow To Thee My Country. Or Jerusalem. Or Rule Britannia.

As an American, I have to go with “O Canada beats the pants off the Star Spangled Banner, in terms of singability”. Oh sure, we learn to sing it, but nobody’s GOOD at it. Drinking-song, my ass. Whereas it’s just fun to belt out “O Canada”.

I agree with the commenter above who nominates either “Jerusalem” or “Rule Britannia” for Britain’s anthem, because, c’mon.

Canada’s anthem is not that good you’re biased and i’m sure Shakira really likes her anthem and also the sultan is probably a really cool guy once you get to know him better and i was really sad when that man from Congo was killed.

Also, no one’s ever seen Rocket Robin Hood and Ulysses 31 was better.

Using the Union Jack as a basic genre of flag is silly. The Union Jack is itself composed of three different cross-based flags: the St. George’s Cross of England (red orthogonal cross on white), the St. Andrew’s Cross of Scotland (white diagonal cross on blue), and the St. Patrick’s Cross of Ireland (red diagonal cross on white). That’s why the Union Jack looks kinda wonky – it’s got the St. George’s cross on top of the other two, which are sort of interleaved (on each diagonal arm, the clockwise side is Scotland’s white and the counterclockwise side is Ireland’s red), bordered in white (from the England and Ireland flags) on a blue field (from the Scottish flag).

It’s actually a reasonably elegant way of combining three different flags and subtly pointing out the supremacy of one over the other two.

For bonus vexillology-nerd points, figure out what similar designs would have been proposed if Scotland or Ireland had been the dominant component of the trio. (Note also that Wales gets pretty shafted here.)

Darth Paradox – The Union Flag is based on three base constituents, it’s influence in world flags is primarialy Imperial, so using it as a overall category is valid IMO.

What isn’t of course, is calling it the Union Jack, unless MGK’s severs are based on a ship.

I should point out that the Canadian anthem is much cooler in French. How many other anthems have lines like “Your chest is bloodied with glorious flowers”?

So far as flags are concerned, don’t overlook Cyprus (only flag to feature a picture of the country) and Rwanda (only flag to feature the first letter of the country’s name.)

LOL, I think you have some bad translation going on. That line translates to, “Thy brow is wreathed with a glorious garland of flowers.”

I’ve read something similar to this before. If I recall, the author was annoyed that so many countries simply ripped of “La Marseillaise” or “God Save the Queen”, and concluded that Nepal’s anthem (the new, commie one) was one of the best. Nepal has definitely got some serious anthem mojo going on.

Australia:
Fun fact. We all hate our national anthem and most of us pretend that we* didn’t vote for it, but rather for Waltzing Matilda and that the vote was ‘fixed’ by the Government due to Waltzing Matilda being about stealing sheep and then hanging oneself.

I pretty much prefer hearing any other national anthem (possibly to the exclusion of the USA’s) to my own. It inspires cringing and I refuse to sing it on any occasion. I can’t believe you passed it. I declare a Technical Fail (did not attempt exam).

*This being ‘Australians’. I was far to young to vote on this myself.

*England* doesn’t *have* a national anthem.

‘God Save the Queen’ is the anthem of the Royal Family.

‘God Save the Queen’ is no more the English national anthem than it is the national anthem of Scotland, Canada or any of the other Commonwealth nations.

Alberta has a pretty nice flag, but really, the greatest flag in the world has got to be Alaska’s. Simplicity, symbolism and elegance in one beautiful design. Bonus points for being designed by a thirteen-year-old.

I don’t see how “complexity” is an advantage, or ease of play for any citizen a disadvantage, for a national anthem.
I’d say the need for formal training or a naturally gifted voice is actually a strike against an anthem. Anyone being able to play it, especially on as simple and primitive an instrument as a vuvuzela, is a plus.

(Tried to post this last night – let’s see if it works tonight).

As an Australian, I think I should point out two things:

First, the original second, officially dropped, verse begins “When gallant Cook from Albion sailed…” and ends “… Britannia Rules The Waves!”

As a Canadian, you might see how this lost some popularity last century. The other one also mentions Britannia, and is a bit jingoistic for our tastes, ya know?

Secondly, the vote thing – Waltzing Matilda is about the suicide of a sheep rustler. Not entirely appropriate for a National Anthem, although some countries may disagree. Nonetheless, Australia for once voted sober, and put paid to the idea.

Trivia: There is a small organisation of intellectuals (i.e. doomed) with the stated aim of instituting the somewhat-prettier-less-nationalistic-but-still-referencing-Britain “Song of Australia” as the national Anthem: http://www.southaustralianhistory.com.au/song.htm

As rated by my personal “buying random but cool flags to stick on a pole as group locators on the National Mall”, Wales and Albania win. Dragon, and two headed eagle black on red.

And the SSB is pretty awesome, which is why I’m always annoyed by people wanting to change in the much blander America the Beautiful as our anthem. Yes, it’s hard to sing solo, but it sounds pretty good when a stadium is belting it out, and without words it says ANTHEM. Francis Scott Key knew to steal the best, man.

I’d suggest similarly rating the U.S. state anthems, but half of them are simply “O Tannenbaum” with the state name swapped out for the bit about the Christmas Tree, and the other half are either repurposed college fight songs, or are so forgettable that even the state residents don’t know what they are.

Pretty much all US citizens secretly love “Oh Canada” – it’s probably the main reason we watch hockey. Not sure why, since our own national anthem is pretty distinctive and excellent; I think it’s just that nobody bawls out their anthem with the same enthusiasm Canadians do; it’s hard not to get swept up in it.

I hope you reserve a spot for defunct anthems. Some of the old Soviet anthems, Kazakhstan in particular, are absolutely epic. Russia was smart just to change the words but keep the old tune for their anthem. Also, nobody sings it anymore of course (except for maybe North Korea?), but the Internationale is a fantastic song.
