The King William’s College Quiz has come and gone for another year, and of course its insistence that quiz-takers “know a lot of things” of course just makes the whole thing harder than it really needs to be. Therefore, once again we bring you the Not Quite The King William’s College Quiz, which we promise is not quite as hard as its namesake and panders to nerds shamelessly. 2G might be the TX, from the third Terminator movie.
3A sounds like someone from the barricade in Les Miserables – Marius?
7E sounds like Captain America, from Neil Gaiman’s miniseries 1602.
I am not 100% sure about any of those, though.
Oh, 7D is The Fifth Elephant. I’m pretty sure about that one.
1F: Weirdly enough, Count Chocula.
Question 2 possible theme: Machine(s)
2A: Alexander Hardtegen, in the 2002 version of “The Time Machine”.
2D: The impulse engines of the USS Constellation, from ST:TOS “The Doomsday Machine”.
2E: Aaron Stack, the Machine Man, from Nextwave.
3I: Bigby Wolf?
Question 5 possible theme: vampires/undead
5A: Varney the Vampire.
5G: One of the Ringwraiths, aka “The Black Easterling”.
5H: Barnabas Collins.
Question 6 possible theme: swords
6C: Doomgiver, the sword of justice (Saberhagen’s Book of Swords).
6E: Dawn, a greatsword (ASOIAF).
6H: Totsuka-no-Tsurugi, the “ten-fist sword” of Susano-o-no-Mikito, Japanese storm god.
7C is M.I.L.F. Island from 30 Rock, I think
To say that 7G was 6 would be to force myself and others to remember that 9 happened, and that would be a mistake.
Pretty sure 7H is Théah.
Possible Theme for 3: People whose names end in by? Because 3F is Maeby Bluth.
6A: Dyrnwyn, I think (Cauldron thief, Taran?) But isn’t that Welsh?
6I: Godric Gryffindor’s sword.
The theme for Part Seven might be numbers.
4C: I think it’s Yossarian from Catch 22.
QUESTION FIVE:
i. – Who let go of a ledge when their lover betrayed them?
Imhotep, at the end of The Mummy Returns, yes?
Pretty sure 6G is a reference to the D&D cartoon — in which case it’s a (magic) shield.
1G seems like it would be Patrick Swayze’s character in ghost, reinforcing the theory that the theme for 1 is the Undead.
I think the theme for 2 is going to be Robots/AIs (and their friends)
4A might be Elizabeth Swann in The Worlds End.
‘Machine’ makes more sense for 2 than robots. :/
Assuming 5 is vampires, 5F might be the Confessor from Astro City
1B is one of the Legionnaires, I think, but I forget who.
4G – Inspector Gadget?
2H might be the Doctor (and Amy & Rory) in Asylum of the Daleks
I think the theme of #1 is nobility or royalty. (or trappings thereof)
1b is Princess Peach, from Super Princess Peach.
1g is the Marquis de Carabas from Neverwhere
1h is, I believe, Polgara the Sorceress, also known as the Duchess of Erat.
1B. Raven from Teen Titans
3G. I doubt it’s Henderson the Rain King, but I still want to guess that one.
I think 4H is Turanga Leela
4E might be Edmund Blackadder, from the 4th series episode ‘Corporal Punishment’.
Possible theme is names which start with E, except Leela for 4H kind of kills that (we find out about her prom dress in the episode ‘The Day the Earth Stood Stupid’).
If we’re going with numbers as the theme for 7, 7a might be Ten Towns in Icewind Dale (from the Crystal Shard, the first Drizzt book).
6g wouldn’t be a magic shield, because the D&D cartoon featured a cavalier, not a paladin.
6d Oar, or Bokken- Miyamoto Musashi carved a bokken from an oar, and used it in his duel Sasaki Kojiro at a sandbar.
Is question 2 the Avengers? I think the answer to 2A is the Scarlet Witch, 2D is the gamma bomb, 2F is Captain America, and 2I is Iron Man.
6G: I get the feeling the paladin from another world is a reference to Holger Carlson/Ogier the Dane from “Three Hearts and Three Lions”, in which case it would be Cortana, forged alongside Durendal.
1A) Mimic (See Dark X-Men)
1B) Speedball/Penance
2a: Harry Dresden.
I think the theme for #4 might be ‘Captains’ — Blackadder is a captain in the army, both Elizabeth Swann and Leela are captains of their ships.
I think UnlikelyLass is right- Yossarian is an army air force captain.
So, 4g is Captain Caveman.
Is 4b to do with Edward from Big Fish? He joins the circus b/c he is desperate to find out more about the woman he loves. Not sure how that fits in with the captain theme though.
2a Harry Dresden
3d gallabatorix, or whatever the name of the “evil” king in Eragon was
3g Rob McKenna, rain god, Long Dark Teatime of the soul?
7d The Fifth Elephant
4i is Captain Canuck.
1A: Sentry, due to his pairing with the Void
1B: Legion, due all his personalities having different powers. but that’s just a guess. or two.
1a could be Count Vertigo.
1c is definitely the Duke of Deception.
I’m guessing all the 1s have some kind of noble title in their name.
2a. Possibly Hal Mayne. Definitely not Harry Dresden.
If this one works along the same lines as last time, there should be a common word linking all the answers of a group. Some contenders so far:
Q1 –> COUNT
1a: Count Vertigo
1f: Count Chocula
Q2 –> MACHINE
2a: Guy Pearce in “The Time Machine”
2d: The Doomsday Machine
2e: The Machine Man
2g: The T-X from “T3: Rise of the Machines”
Q3 –> ????
Q4 –> CAPTAIN
4c: Captain Yossarian
4e: Captain Blackadder
4g: Captain Caveman
4h: Captain Leela
4i: Captain Canuck
Q5 –> ??
Q6 –> SWORD
6c: Doomgiver, the sword of justice (Saberhagen’s Book of Swords).
6e: Dawn, a greatsword (ASOIAF).
6g: Holger Carlson/Ogier the Dane from “Three Hearts and Three Lions”, in which case it would be Cortana, forged alongside Durendal.
6h: Totsuka-no-Tsurugi, the “ten-fist sword” of Susano-o-no-Mikito, Japanese storm god.
6i: Godric Gryffindor’s sword.
Q7 –> ???
7c: MILF Island from “30 Rock”
7d: The Fifth Elephant of Discworld
Both those answers seem really solid, but I don’t see any common word… well, this one is trickier, maybe there’s an extra step.
I’m fairly certain that the theme for Question Seven is numbers. Most of the parts in that category involve numbers in some way or another (either in the question or the answer).
Ooh, if the theme of 7 is numbers, then 7g is the character 6 from the movie 9!
[…] missed it because of the holidays and wassailing and the like, last week I posted the second annual Not Quite The King William’s College Quiz and commenters thus far are not even half-finished and haven’t even identified all of the […]
“I’m fairly certain that the theme for Question Seven is numbers”… says Mitchell HUNDRED.
IT’S ALL CONNECTED
But seriously, “each answer has a number in it” seems LESS tough than last year, rather than more. Unless there’s some pattern to the numbers perhaps… something that elevates it into more fiendish territory.
…..and yet, 6 from “9” is a solid answer too. That would give us:
7a
7b
7c — 30
7d — 5
7e
7f
7g — 6, 9
7h
7i
Still not seeing a pattern…
How is it less tough when it specifically broadens the number of potential answers for each question? A category where each answer involves a specific word means that once you solve the category, the unknown answers get exponentially easier.
Like, here are some sample categories from the real KWC over the past couple of years:
Diarists
Things that happened in Spain
References to fish in the works of Shakespeare
Royals
Body parts
Things related to diamonds
I guess by “less tough” I actually meant “less strict”… or less tough on YOUR end to fill a category? 🙂
It made sense to me when I wrote it… maybe because I also like designing puzzles so I was looking at it from a design standpoint without realizing it…??
I’d also assumed that the real KWC stuck militantly to the “common word” structure, which it turns out, they don’t. Oops.
Question 7 is “NUMBERS”, guys!! 😀
UPDATED to reflect no longer having my head up my ass:
Q1 –> COUNT
1a: Count Vertigo
1f: Count Chocula
Q2 –> MACHINE
2a: Guy Pearce in “The Time Machine”
2d: The Doomsday Machine
2e: The Machine Man
2g: The T-X from “T3: Rise of the Machines”
Q3 –> ????
Q4 –> CAPTAIN
4c: Captain Yossarian
4e: Captain Blackadder
4g: Captain Caveman
4h: Captain Leela
4i: Captain Canuck
Q5 –> UNDEAD CHARACTERS
5a: Varney the Vampire.
5f: the Confessor from Astro City
5g: One of the Ringwraiths, aka “The Black Easterling”.
5h: Barnabas Collins

6h: Totsuka-no-Tsurugi, the “ten-fist sword” of Susano-o-no-Mikito, Japanese storm god.
6i: Godric Gryffindor’s sword.
Q7 –> NUMBERS
7c: MILF Island from “30 Rock”
7d: The Fifth Elephant of Discworld
7g: 6 from “9”
#1 isn’t “counts,” it’s “people with noble titles” – Greg ED named a couple more answers of people with titles who aren’t counts
also, 3B is Lew Zealand.
Might 3i be Bigby Wolf?
3c is possibly Harley Quinn (from Mad Love)
I can’t help but feel like Q3 has a divinity theme. It all feels like mythology or religion… which would make
3g – Rob McKenna, indeed
3i – some variation on the God of Abraham
but I’m pretty unsure.
Pretty sure 7b is Rokugan, from Legend of the FIVE Rings.
Could Question 3 be “Characters whose names are puns”?
3b – Lew Zealand
3c – Harley Quinn
3i – Bigby Wolf
Possibly. 3e might be Max Payne, which would continue that trend.
I think 7h is Theah, in the 7th Sea setting
If 3 is puns, 3f is definitely Maeby Funke (because she’s Michael’s cousin, Maeby/maybe)!
SUPER NEW UPDATE OF EXTREME FUN — SPECIAL “I HATE SCROLLING ALL THE WAY UP” EDITION

6a: Dyrnwyn(Cauldron thief, Taran?
6b. Who was born in a Soho whorehouse?
6c: Doomgiver, the sword of justice (Saberhagen’s Book of Swords).
6d. Oar, or Bokken- Miyamoto Musashi carved a bokken from an oar, and used it in his duel Sasaki Kojiro at a sandbar.
6e: Dawn, a greatsword (ASOIAF).
6f. Who is commanded by someone whose is marked with Grace?
6g: Holger Carlson/Ogier the Dane from “Three Hearts and Three Lions”, in which case it would be Cortana, forged alongside Durendal.
6h: Totsuka-no-Tsurugi, the “ten-fist sword” of Susano-o-no-Mikito, Japanese storm god.
6i: Godric Gryffindor’s sword.

7a. 10 Towns in Icewind Dale (from the Crystal Shard, the first Drizzt book)
7b: Rokugan, from Legend of the 5 Rings.
7c: MILF Island from “30 Rock”
7d: The 5th Elephant of Discworld
7e. Who was exiled by the President-for-Life?
7f. Which policeman investigated an outbreak of zombie attacks?
7g: 6 from “9″
7h: Theah from 7th Sea
7i. Who successfully killed his ex-girlfriend?
With the categories more fleshed out/better defined I have a few ideas.
1E- Baroness from late DDP era GI Joe.
5C- The Ghost of Abraham Lincoln from Venture Bros. “Guess Who’s Coming to State Dinner”
I think 3a is Hud from Cloverfield.
Hud is also a pun, like Heads Up Display
6B – Eric Brooks, also called Blade the vampire hunter.
I’ll be posting the answers next Wednesday, so you’ve got until then.
2i – War Machine?
Another possible answer for 6G is the sword Hill Cleaver, carried by the extradimensional reptilian paladin Dragonbait in a series of Forgotten Realms novels by Kate Novak and Jeff Grubb. (The first one was _Azure Bonds_, if that rings a bell.)
For 6A, I dunno if we want Taran and Dyrnwyn. The Prydain Chronicles draw on Welsh myths, not Irish ones, and are heavily fictionalized besides. My wife thought she remembered a story where the lid of the cauldron was used to kill a king, but that won’t do if we want a sword.
I think Bender is correct, and 2i is James Rhodes, AKA War Machine. Not only did he work with Tony Stark for a long time, he was also a member of Worldwatch, which was specifically formed to investigate human rights abuses.
If only because of the numbers theme, I think 7e is Steve Rogers, from the comic 1602.
Also not a lock: 7f could be Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil 2?
4B could be Captain Chantel DuBois from Madagascar 3.
5f- Captain Kara Thrace from the new Battlestar Galactica.
Not 1G, but that would work for the answer to 5C.
Kara should be 4F, not 5, sorry.
7E Number 6 (The Prisoner)
