If Romney wins, I am SO getting that Zombie Killer stock from the Red Jacket website. And taking shooting lessons. Lots of shooting lessons.
I feel like I have to ask: Why the hate for the Doctor Horrible, delicious pseduo-irony for its title not-withstanding? Was it Felicia Day’s weird, mannequin-like performance (i.e. Felcicia Day was in it)? Did you not like the songs? Do you not like musicals to begin with (nothing wrong with that that)? Hatred of laundromats? Spackle?
THANK YOU! Now I know that someone else out there that doesn’t gush on and on about how great Dr. Horrible is, I don’t feel so put upon for feeling it was just, sorta, there.
Dr. C
Hey, I enjoyed Dr. Horrible. Wouldn’t say it was brilliant, but it was quirky and fun. Sort of like how Zooey Deschanel wishes she were.
Also, Zomney 2012
Good news for me, then. I know a guy who teaches at a Parkour gym.
It’s more apparent to me now than ever how much clout Obama’s campaign has when it comes to this generation.
Creator of “The Girls,” Lena Dunham? Joss Whedon? Stars of both “Parks and Rec” and “Modern Family”? What exactly does Romney have going for him to target this audience?
I’ll tell you who Romney has: Meat Loaf!! MEAT FRIKKIN LOAF!!!! GAWD BLEKKHSS AAAKKKCCHCHHHAAAAKKHHH!!!!
Romney’s advantage is that the people he targets will actually go out and vote, whereas the people who like all the cool celebrities who like Obama are too lazy to go out and vote. Which scares the beejebus out of me. I think I spelled that wrong. But I did vote.
Um. Not sure why liking “cool celebrities” means you’re too lazy to vote…especially since it was exactly the same back in 2008. I guess there’s the fact that Obama appeals more to the youth vote, who traditionally have trouble making it out to the polls, and the fact that people may not be as fired up about Obama this time out. But it’s not like the right is seriously fired up about Romney either. An awful lot of them hate the guy as much as anyone on the left. He’s a uniquely hateable guy.
Anyway, on a more serious note, Dr. Horrible: an entertaining, flawed bit of fluff that gets a lot of leeway from me for the circumstances under which it was made. I may enjoy sleek, well-produced stuff, but I’m always going to be more inherently sympathetic to the scrappy, bargain-basement cult offerings. Which is why The Avengers is my least favourite Whedon thing.
I haven’t watched Joss’ video yet, but all the reactions I’m seeing here involve Dr. Horrible and zombies, which I’m pretty sure have fuck-all to do with why I should vote for Obama.
I’m sure it’s like a tongue-in-cheek thing he’s doing, but I doubt it’s going to sway any Young Republicans in the Firefly fandom.
Okay, I just watched the video and yeah, it’s just him rambling on and on about zombies. I kept waiting for a point, and he’s just “Nope, references to zombies, folks.” He just never stops. If he were talking about leprechauns like this you’d think he was on drugs.
This video is just like every asshole on YouTube except he has a nicer house and he knows how to operate a camera. At least that Happy Days thing Ron Howard did in 2008 actually had a point.
Now I really want to know how bad Dr. Horrible was to somehow rate below this.
Well, why’s it less palatable than the other?
Because using the potential for an end of society scenario to couch criticism of the GOP economic and social platform is less pertinent than re-hashing old characters in pop culture to do the same thing?
I suppose if you’ve dedicated yourself ideologically to not noticing that mitt Romney’s policy preference is for massive and widespread suffering, you could somehow find a way to miss the point of that video.
Mike, the point was that Romney and Ryan are trying to destroy the social safety net that America used to take pride in having – the thing that made digging our way out of the Great Depression possible, and made the Great Recession suck at least slightly less than it would otherwise have done. He was phrasing it in terms of a zombie apocalypse because he knows that it’ll resonate with his core audience.
And while I wouldn’t call Dr Horrible brilliant, it was entertaining. Which reminds me – I need to watch “Commentary: the Musical” (AKA the DVD commentary track) one of these days.
@Mike Smith: “If he were talking about leprechauns like this you’d think he was on drugs.”
Yeah! Or socialism!
‘ “If he were talking about leprechauns like this you’d think he was on drugs.”
Yeah! Or socialism!’
Lucky Charms.
Am not a real Whedon fan by any means, except for The Avengers and Dr. Horrible. I do like this infomercial tho.
Prodigal: “…the social safety net that America used to take pride in having – the thing that made digging our way out of the Great Depression possible…”
Pretty sure that the Romney types subscribe to the theory that Big Government’s socialist meddling caused the Great Depression. I try not to think about that too hard without warming up first, though — brain cramp.
@Eric: The actual argument, at least as used by the conservatives I’ve had discussions with online, is that the socialist meddling is what caused the Depression to take as long as it did to end. I concede, however, that there may be even less rational conservatives out there who make the one you describe.
In other news, it seems that David Frum has seen this video, decided that it sounded perfectly reasonable, and written up a doublethink-tastic Romney endorsement of his own.
Hmmm, let’s see, Romney has Kid Rock, Toby Keith, and Ted Nugent in his corner.
Says a lot, doesn’t it?
