First and foremost to me, he’ll be Hendley the Scrounger in The Great Escape. Amazing actor, and always came across as a likeable guy.

An amazing charm.

Hardly his best known work, but his affable sheriff in ‘Support Your Locan Sheriff’ is one of the all-time comic creations.

Although not as biting as ‘Blazing Saddles’ is was a very warm and funny parody of ‘Western’ conventions and movies.

By all accounts, a true gentleman. RIP, sir.

Both Support Your Local Sheriff and Support Your Local Gunfighter are under-appreciated gems. If you’ve not seen them, do.

For my money I was always a fan of My Fellow Americans. He’ll be missed.

Reliably great, all the way through his career. Maverick, Support your local sheriff, the Great Escape, Rockford Files, right through to My Fellow Americans and Space Cowboys, not to mention making the movie remake of Maverick so much better whenever he was on screen.

I will miss “Ole Jimmy” and Rockford files is one of my favorite old shows. He was one of the oldies but goodies. I’m sad to hear he died. Another ‘end-of-an-era’. Rest In Peace! James.

I blame early HBO and its incessant re-airings for my unhealthy love of Tank.
