In _The Arms of Krupp 1587-1968_ William Manchester documents how the head of the family came home after a meeting with other German industrialists where they decided to back the Nazi Party and proudly announced “We’ve hired Hitler!”

I’d just like to drop in a word about how damn brilliant Julian Glover is as Donovan. He makes the most of his relatively few scenes, exuding an arrogant charm that makes him compulsively watchable. Really, he’s always a reliably great character actor (with the possible exception of his Bond turn, where he was asked to turn off his charisma to conceal the twist that he’s the bad guy).

Uh huh. So you’re saying that if you empower white supremacists in the course of using them to fulfill your bid for immortality, then whatever your personal beliefs, you’re still tainted by throwing in with evil?

This post isn’t entirely about “something else” than the last two, is it?

In retrospect, I don’t think I fully understand Donovan’s plan; does he really think that all the Nazis want out of The Holy Grail is to “write themselves into the Grail legend”, and that they’d casually let Donovan reap the immortality the Grail gives? He really thinks the Nazis are giving him tanks and soldiers just so they get a chapter in the history books and not for the most sought after item in history?

It makes more sense with Belloq in Raiders, as the Ark fulfills separate roles of radio and WMD. The Grail only provides eternal life, and just giving that away to some American guy doesn’t seem to jive with a group of people obsessed with their “1000 year Reich” and all that. Maybe he thinks that he’ll get to share it with them, but then why does he comment on how he’ll get to live on after Hitler has “gone the way of the dodo”?

My own personal theory, that I’m very proud of, is that Indiana Jones!Hitler is a lot like Real!Hitler, in that both Hitlers think that magic is crap. Sure, ancient viking and Teutonic rituals make for great spectacle, but they don’t actually mean anything. Instead, Hitler was big on Maus tanks and jets and other wunderwaffe. Hitler’s an alt-right sic-fi fan; Himmler’s the white supremacist fantasy geek. And considering the other stupid shit Hitler spent money on, there’s a non-zero chance the Nazis really are just trying to get a chapter in the history books. I think Lucas even said in an interview somewhere that Hitler never planned on weaponizing the Ark, but that’s just some fourth-hand information I heard, so take that with a grain of salt.

And when Spielberg made his give-me-my-Oscar-you-fuckers movie, he went with Nazis again, Schindler’s List . . .
