Agreed on both A. and B. Stay classy, MGK.
wait…Amy Winehouse is dead?
Really?
Wait, so what’s the song for those of us whom YouTube blocks?
For YEARS I lamented the lack of great soul voices, listening to lauded pretenders that were all voice and no *soul* – thought we had something there in Lauryn Hill, maybe Alicia Keys, but that didn’t exactly work out – and then I heard Back In Black, and thought, “It took you damn well long enough, world.” (And of *course* she was a Brit – outclassing the States at their own game yet again.) She had it all: a voice with honey and venom and sex and sadness, with an off-kilter/classic songwriting style that was both raw and wry. So yeah, all these contradictions unified that makes for great music (and absolutely killer production on BIB didn’t hurt). I would have been okay waiting twenty years for her comeback after clawing her way, in an imagined future, through sobriety, surprise motherhood, an aborted religious conversion, and gigs in Branson, MO. But goddamn, motherfucking alas.
And yeah, MGK, Valerie kicks Rehab’s ass.
