I haven’t seen ‘War and Remembrance’, but I have read half of the book on which it’s based (and ‘The Winds of War’, its prequel). So that makes you sort of not old.
Apparently, fondant used to be an actual edible part of the cake. I have a cook book from the ’40s that has a tasty fondant recipe with several interesting variants. Of course, this book also has a recipe for coffee where you put egg in it for some goddamn reason. It was a weird time, I guess.
