So I’ve been busy the last week, not with work (well, I’m always busy with work-a-day work, but you know what I mean). I’ve been busy writing, because Harper Voyager announced this, and I’ve got a half-finished novel that’s at about the 60K word mark and if I bust ass I might be able to submit it by deadline and have it not be shitty.
I’m going to try and maintain the regular posting level for the next few weeks, but if things drop off, things drop off a bit. Sorry, guys. If it looks like I won’t make deadline I will ease off the throttle.

Talking to an author friend of mine, I ran this contest past him. He thinks it’s a spectacularly bad idea for you to enter, especially considering that I think you’re a good writer. If your book is good enough to win this contest, it is good enough to be bought by one of the big publishers and for reals published and made some money off of. That this contest doesn’t even offer prize money is indicative of its shambliness. The market for science fiction is huge, and it’s one of the few remaining genres that still makes more money off of print editions. He thinks you should spend more time making the book good and then shop it around.
That’s because it’s not a contest. It’s HarperCollins’ sci/fantasy imprint saying “we’re going to look at non-agented submissions for two weeks, rather than our standard policy of, you know, not looking at them.”
Ah-hah! (but perhaps you should talk to someone who knows this stuff about the relative merits of getting digitally published versus shopping for an agent with a more polished book in a seemingly lucrative genre?)
