Giving Elementary a chance? I’m pretty sure we’re all obligated to hate it if we want to keep our coveted indie cred.
In seriousness, I’ll wait until the reviews are in and then render my decision on the show. However, I still think that making Watson a woman was a bush league move, and I feel like she and Sherlock will inevitably wind up with the painfully predictable playful sexual tension that network crime shows run on. They could surprise me though, so there’s hope, and as much as I hate to say it, you know that if the CBS version ends with a gut wrenching cliffhanger they bastards won’t force you to what over a year for the conclusion. So that’s a major point in the CBS version’s favor.

I wanted to say the Mindy Project would get the ax first (especially if it’s the critical darling that it’s made out to be) because show quality is generally inversely related to viewer quantity. Plus “female comedian minority lead” pretty much guaranties no one will watch it.

Then I noticed it was a CBS show and – if they’re so desperate they’re keeping Two Broke Girls – its safe to say that they’re very worried about what will happen to them when How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, and (urgh) Two and a Half Men wear out their welcome. Any network that allows Rules of Engagement to survive (HOW DOES DAVID SPADE KEEP GETTING WORK?) will happily take even something as bland as Partners.

Then I figured it’d be Made in Jersey. While reading the description I got bored once I hit “legal drama” and completely lost interest at “plucky”. Still, this seems like one of those shows that could have a long run while still being completely generic. Besides they could easily survive sweeps week by booking a Snookie guest appearance.

No, I think the first casualty will be Last Resort. The marketing for that show is so ubiquitous that it can’t possibly live up to network expectations. Its a shame too, it looked like it would have made for a great movie (not sure why they sold it as a TV show).

I nominate “Made in Jersey” as the first one to meet the axe, “666 Park Avenue” as that show that seems to come on every season that I get hooked on but it gets cancelled by the end of the season, “Elementary” as the show that has a pretty good first season, but grows increasingly duller and less interesting as the years go by, until in the end I’m just watching it out of habit, “Last Resort” as the critical darling that nobody watches, and “Vegas” as the slow-burning potboiler that simmers for five seasons but probably should’ve been take off the stove after three.

And yes, I plan to watch all of ’em. (At least the pilots.)

Nice illustration. I have an image of Mindy Cohen indoors, waving a stick with Natalie’s head from The Facts Of Life outside, then watching SNL to see if Bobby Moynihan is doing a cruel impression of her. Then again, if a woman can handle Chris Farley parodying her without severe trauma, then anything else would be nothing.

Nice to see somebody looking forward to TAR. I know that the show’s been dipping, the Emmy voters are lazy, and Phil Keoghan would’ve gladly shot the final four teams of TAR20 if it gave the far more genial Bopper & Mark the $1 million. But unlike Survivor, at least there’s the presence of hope that a season won’t suck.

I would pick Revolution to die first, but then again Terra Nova lasted longer than I thought it would, so maybe Go On?

If 666 Park Ave. revels in lurid cheesiness the way the trailers have suggested it might, it could be AWESOME.

Okay, so I think I’m going to change my answer back to “The Mindy Project”. In the US it airs on Fox and decent shows almost never get a chance there. I wonder if NBC will let her ride out the final season of the Office when Fox replaces her show with “When Animals Attack People in High Speed Chases”.

Partners, I think.

Revolution will go forward due to the high level of cost already put into it. Too much invested in it to kill it too quickly.

Changing my answer as well. Praying Animal Practice gets canned because it blows.

Having now caught “The Neighbors” I’m saying that as it almost amazingly awful. And I like Jami Gertz…

Saw the Elementary premiere tonight. Wow, that was a tragic waste of Lucy Liu. Every second she spends on this is another one she can’t spend working on something good.

I still think it’ll outlast most of these other shows though. This series still has the Sherlock Holmes recognition to fall back on … even if it’s barely recognizable as Sherlock Holmes.

New pick… Neighbors will die first. I even kind of liked it, even though it wasn’t, objectively speaking, y’know, good.

But even if it were good, it’s waaaaaay too high-concept quirky-zany to survive. High-concept quirky-zany never does, even when it IS good (see Better Off Ted, Pushing Daisies).

I gave Elementary ten minutes and it felt like so many other shows out there, from Bones to The Mentalist. Quirky super genius makes police look useless, partnered with straight laced type to keep him in check. Monk did it so much better.

At least with Castle the cops actually seem competent and Rick Castle himself is likeable. That guy on The Mentalist? I wanted to punch him in the face by the end of the first episode.

I didn’t see this post until just now, but I thought you’d like to know I was inspired by your past efforts to write my own review of Elementary in a poor imitation of your style…
