Yesterday was my favorite DC character other than Rex The Wonder Dog (who I need to start a new con sketchbook for, although the problem with Rex is that he is a dog and fairly easy to draw; any good Rex sketch, of course, has him doing appropriately Wonder Dog things, which means more complex drawings of Rex, say, disarming a nuclear bomb with his teeth while juggling baby kittens with his rearpaws, or as Rex calls it, “Tuesday”), so today of course is my favorite Marvel character:

Surprised to see so much – or, rather, any – love for the late 90s red trenchcoat / weird spangled dress shirt look.
It’s a cool look, but yes, surprising.
I’ll have you know that is easily my favorite outfit for Strange. I am not even being a little bit sarcastic.
That having been said, the Strange sketchbook has four references:
1. Alan Davis doing classic Strange
2. Mark Buckingham doing trenchcoat Strange
3. The Gene Colan “masked Strange” look
4. The recent black-and-red Defenders costume as done by Terry Dodson
A lot of artists commented that they were tempted to do masked Strange but ultimately went for either classic or trenchcoat. (I think most people decide that Strange doesn’t feel right without visible facial hair.)
A dog isn’t just a dog. Even if you get portrait shots of Rex, as opposed to him punching a croc, the sketches would still be unique. Now, if you wind up paying extra for “action shots” where Rex punches out Kller Croc? Or beats up the guy behind the Day of Judgement special for making him get possessed by Sloth? Go for it.
My sole Dr. Strange sketch. I wasn’t planning on getting it from Alex Robinson . . . I just knew him, and he was available to do it. He does good work . . . funniest thing happened when he did Hygena from Who Wants To Be a Superhero? for me, and it turned out Hygena’s “alter ego’s” husband was a huge fan of his.
ETA: Why Pooh? Also: “WHAT IF . . . Hank McCoy was the Sorcerer Supreme?!?”
Strange always reminds me of Roger Delgado as The Master, in one of his occult moods.
Oh, I should say – I don’t think drawing dogs would be anywhere near as easy as you think. Not a lot of artists have a ready facility for drawing animals – when was the last time you saw a really well-drawn dog that wasn’t obviously photo-referenced in a mainstream comic?
