MONGOLIA! I’ve really got to listen to some of these when I get home.

Also, can we expect a return of MGK grading all those songs we sent him?

I was hoping you’d do more of this sometime. Mauritania really is oddly catchy.

The fact that Montenegro’s national anthem is the music that supervillains play in their lairs is exactly why Montenegro’s national anthem is the best. I mean, come on, that’s awesome. Convincing the rest of the world that you just don’t give a fuck is a perfectly legitimate direction to take a national anthem.

Out of curiosity – if Canada (or the U.S., or Australia…) were to include First Nations languages, how should it be done? New Zealand has a real advantage in that there’s pretty much just one language to remember, whereas the countries I just named have quite a few. Also, history: again, NZ has one major people-group prior to European contact, while most other Anglophone colony-states displaced cultures which had multiple epochs of history along fractured power lines in constant flux.

Which doesn’t mean it’s not a project worth trying. Heck, you could get away with medieval Latin as “language of Europe” in a pinch, or nineteenth-century French, and for all I know there’s an equivalent Australian tongue, or something useful for much of North America. But I’m very curious where one would start.

Does Micronesia’s 00 score mean the U.S. at least won’t be alone in last place? Or does the scale go into negatives? The Star-Spangled Banner is OK if it’s played by a band or sung by a really top-notch singer, and it’s cute to hear a bunch of kids sing it badly, but any vocal version between a bunch of cute kids and a singer good enough to win a Grammy just sounds bad.

Of course, for the Netherlands to really be from the perspective of Bill the Citrus it’d have to be in French, since he didn’t speak Dutch.

As a mexican, I think you scored the mexican anthem too low 😛 It’s true that it is ridiculously long, which is why they never play it in full nowadays. There are several versions of different lengths, and usually at most events the shorter version is played. Surely our willingness to tackle our anthem’s weakest point is worth some extra points, right?

Also, if it comes down to it, the Canadian national anthem has four verses. I have never heard the last three sung, and the very last is basically ‘we’re waiting for things to get better and moderately confident that it will.’

I love my country, but of the four verses, only one and two are really worth much, lyrics-wise.

Thanks to Montenegro, I now know approximately what the national anthem of Latveria would sound like.

Just out of interest, when you get around to Russia, could you contrast the anthem used in the 90’s with the current one? I think both reflect their respective times and mores fairly well.

You did not like mine (Malaysia’s). I shall now quibble over your review of it.

Yes, we have a King, and yes, we don’t think that’s contradictory to be being “progressive”. Which I put in scare quotes because the original Malay lyric doesn’t mean what the word means to you – it means having electricity, cars, tall buildings, high-speed internet, etc. Yes, we used to be a third world country, why do you ask?

But I am glad you picked the right version to review. Several years ago some idiot got the bright idea to remix it with a marching beat and a faster tempo, and I deeply wanted to tar and feather that guy. Our anthem isn’t a goddamn march, it’s a slow and stately hymn. (Actually, according to apocryphal history it was ripped off of a 19th-century French pop song by one of our sultans who just happened to like the tune.)

I have literally been waiting for you to get around to making this post for three and a half years, because you finally got to my country.

On that note, I can’t believe that you gave New Zealand a 97. The words and lyrics are just such bland garbage.

The Dutch national anthem has to go on and on. The lyrics are an acrostic of “WILLEM VAN NASSOV” (one initial per stanza).

Caught a typo in this post – you gave Montenegro a 39 when you clearly meant to type 99.

Looking forward to seeing the review of Trinidad and Tobago’s, any anthem meant to be played on steelpan is 100/100 in my book.
