The animal portions of Family of the Pride were pretty god-awful from what I remember…

As far as new, female Doctor Who companions go: I’m with you on Martha. While series four went a long way in redeeming Donna, from being a horrible person I wouldn’t want to be dead with in a plauge pit into someone I would want to watch and given that Rose got steadily more irritating and jealous the longer she was in the TARDIS to the point when I was happy to be rid of her, they don’t compare to Martha. Granted her unrequited love for the Doctor, when brought up, was very annoying (mainly because we’d already seen the Doctor/companion love story angle once and I didn’t see how turning it into a one way street was going to make it any more interesting), but I really liked Martha and was disappointed that her return was only for a couple of stories.

The Siegfried and Roy segments of Father of the Pride were by far better than the rest of the show. The segments of the episode where they go to 7-11 should be cut together and put on Youtube.

I was really disappointed with just how little development Martha got, and then she was needlessly done away with at the end of season 3. I was really hoping we’d see her develop more, and have more of an impact upon Tennant’s Doctor. Donna (and season 4) was rather forgettable, and her development towards the end seemed forced upon us in order to make the audience feel anything for her, when she was unlikeable even so near to the end of the series as “Turn Left”. Aside from “Midnight” I can’t really think of any episode out of Season 4 that I really enjoyed, and I’m glad RTD is handing the series over to Stephen Moffat. You can only take so many episodes of people running.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a TV columnist recommend reading a book before. I guess that’s why this Arizona resident is reading a blog on Toronto television…
