My weekly TV column is up at Torontoist.
I think it’s safe to say that the Matrix is the reason that people seem to think that kung-fu>guns. It’s flat fucking wrong, but I think that’s the reason.
“With the bridge gone and the airport unfortunately on the other side of the bridge, a number of citizens are attending to make the jump with their cars. It’s a silent testament to the ‘never give up and never think things out’ spirit of our citizens.”
What? No Love for the Boston Legal Finale?
Ok, I’ve got to ask, why the hate on Shrek? The over-marketed franchise, sure. But why the first movie?
People have been thinking kung fu beats guns since way back in the 60s and 70s when the Hong Kong martial arts movies started getting popular. Kung fu had mystical powers that mere mortals couldn’t begin to understand.
We know better now though (see: Raiders of the Lost Arc scene “Indy vs. Swordsman”). That shit don’t fly no more.
Had John Belushi not died, he’d be by now as loathsome as other SNL breakouts like Myers and Murphy, or as marginalized as Dan Aykroyd.
