Sorry to have to ask this… but could someone explain the significance of this to me? Copper or fiber what? ( The only thing my mind could come up with was trumpet mutes, which I doubt is what I’m looking at. )

Copper has gotten so valuable/expensive that people are stealing it left and right (including large rolls of cable like is stored inside the plywood in this picture) to sell for scrap/recycling.

I’ve heard many stories in the last few months of people caught stealing copper gutters off of old buildings, breaking into buildings to rip wire out of the basement, etc.

I’m gonna steal some anyway.

Erm…Why leave a sign saying that it’s fiber and then cover the sides? If it needs to be kept dry, then why not put it inside? o.O
But as I’m not in construction…

OK, people, here’s the deal:

They’re telling people that the cabling doesn’t contain copper, and thus is not worth stealing.

There’s no value in a gigantic roll of optical fiber cabling to anyone who is *not* involved in the construction and physical repair side of the telecommunications industry.

I guess they’re afraid Bubbles or Dukwan will come through!

Possibly because fiber is made of glass, and is relatively fragile (compared to wire), so they want to protect it from accidental impacts ( or to make it a little less likely that people will mess with it out of boredom (because they’d have to move the boards).

Ah yes, the price of copper.

The reason I haven’t gotten a timely raise recently. … Hm…we have huge reels of copper wire at work and sometimes I’m the last one to leave….

It took me several comments to get it. I read “fiber” and went to a totally different place.

But the spool will still be stolen to make a kick-ass coffee table to go right next to the post-modern plywood/cinderblock entertainment system.
