To make things even worse for poor Vanna – they actually film a week’s worth of episodes in single day. So she doesn’t have to just survive 30 seconds of Pat Sajak a day, she has to deal with more than two minutes of his banter a day.

And yet somehow Sajak continues to live. The woman is clearly a saint.

Anyone besides me remember when some network gave Pat Sajak a talk show? Anyone?

I recall some ugly rumors to that effect, but I was spared any direct experience. And I bet they have some sort of insurance policy that pays the million off if somebody actually gets it.

Lurker, it was CBS pre-Letterman. I never watched it, but I heard it was horrific.

Vanna White is 53 years old now.
Pat Sajak is 63 years old now.

I think its time to put these two out to pasture before one of them falls down and breaks a hip.

For what it’s worth, some actual facts based on my way too extensive J! tryout experience. : -)

While things seem to have gotten better in this regard of late, J! used to get so few non-whites even trying out that they’d never let a qualified one get away to WoF. And once, at a tryout, someone asked what would happen if they didn’t get any of the 50 clues on the tryout test correct. The J! folk quickly responded “Wheel of Fortune tryouts are two studios over”.

Yeah, I can’t actually believe Wheel of Fortune continues to be successful, or that they haven’t replaced Vanna with someone younger and hotter yet. I see it when I’m at my parents’ house somewhat often, and I could not tell you how that final prize deal works.

I guess the only people who watch Wheel of Fortune are the people who have ALWAYS watched Wheel of Fortune, and by gum, they like their Pat & Vanna and don’t you go replacing them with any whippersnapper city-slickin’ Johnny-come-latelys.

But that doesn’t explain why they do these ubercomplicated Hellraiser-puzzle final challenges.

Ooo! I just remembered. Apologies if everyone here already saw this, but to see the stupidest WoF contestants OF ALL TIME just do a YouTube search on “Food Burning Stove”.

Ugh, yes, the random vowel buys. That show makes me scream.

Jeopardy! tryouts are a bit different now – or at least were. Shit, I just realized I’m a month away from having to try out again (my 18 months or so are up) – guess no Jeopardy for me.

But anyway, they do an example version of the show to see how good or bad people will be in the show (I killed this but think I bombed the test version)

Alex- I raged at “hood-burning stove” and it really irked me every time they repeated something the other one literally JUST said. Thanks for ruining what little faith in humanity I had left. =D

CB — You’re welcome. 🙂

[Note: what happens in the clip is they get the puzzle to the point where it says “_OOD BURNING STOVE” and then they CANNOT get it; as CB mentioned they guess “hood-burning” at least twice, “food-burning” a couple times, sometimes just shrugging, and after an eternity they finally get “wood-burning” and it’s ever so pathetic.]

Vanna White won me over a few years ago when she got roped into one of those snarky Q&A’s that Newsweek used to do to fill up a third of a page of celebrity news. I can’t find it online, but trust me that part of it went something like this:

Newsweek: Does the show even need you now that the letters can turn themselves?
Vanna: The show NEVER needed me.

It’s refreshingly humble at first glance, but also a nice way to say, “People like having me around, so I’m still here.”

Doesn’t Wheel get higher ratings than Jeopardy!(!!!!!!?!?!?!) Absurd. I’ve only ever watched Wheel with (surprise) my grandparents, I don’t think I could bring myself to otherwise.

incidentally: http://doublejeopparty.tumblr.com/ I started this yesterday and I’m already planning a montage of Trebek being a smug bastard and/or making a big production out of pronouncing French words correctly.
