Because even if it does happen I will not really care one way or the other.
Memo to Whedonites acting like this is the apocalypse: congratulations, you are now just like those people who complained that Starbuck wasn’t a dude in the Battlestar Galactica reboot, that Chris Pine could never possibly be a convincing James T. Kirk, and… did anybody ever complain about all the Stargate spinoffs? I assume somebody did. You are like that person too.

Huge Whedonite here but I couldn’t care less about the reboot. I’m not spending any money on it. Once I made that decision I could blithely ignore its existence and go along on my merry way.
It’s pretty much what I’ve been doing about the comic for the past several months and it works.
I don’t recall any similarly-themed complaints about the Stargate spinoffs except when they (and the original series) were canceled. Those weren’t reboots, but sequels, really.
And I think the current one, “Stargage Universe” is actually pretty good.
Recovering Whedonite, and I don’t really give a shit about this wither.
Sometimes, sir, I love you.
I’m sorry about the Wheadon. Can I try to convert you to the cult of Neil Finn instead? Worst that happens is you feel a strange urge to buy Australian CD’s.
I hated the Stargate spinoffs because they were entirely too cheesy and partly on principle.
I’m one of the few who liked the Kristy Swanson movie (eh, it was cute) more than the TV show (found the characters and dialogue to be too obnoxious; also find Sarah Michelle Gellar thoroughly unwatchable… but that’s just me!)
Seems like a strange candidate for a reboot given the cult status, though. Who are they trying to appeal to here?
@Snap – Thanks for being the only other person on the planet besides me who liked the movie. 🙂
I 100% stand by the assertion that Chris Pine was deeply miscast as James Kirk. I don’t care if this makes me one of ‘those nerds.’
There’s going to be a Buffy reboot?
Seems a bit soon to me. Other than that, as I have no real intention of watching it, I don’t really care.
Eff yeah!
I was thinking Clayton Moore and The Lone Ranger, but that uproar was because some movie execs were dicks and he couldn’t wear the mask as he had for DECADES.
(Still bugs me – he would have been GREAT advertising!)
Wait, the Buffy reboot is still going ahead? Eh, you learn something new every day.
I think everyone should do what Marvel does and say that movie rights revert back after a few years if you don’t use them. That said, there’s two ways this could go. The reboot could be good and get people interested in the show again, or it could suck, but I’d still have my DVDs.
The fact that they’re going to try and churn this out in less than a year from announce to release speaks towards what level of quality it might have.
Wasn’t Buffy itself already Whedon’s attempt to make a remake of his original buffy movie, except that that remake didn’t SUUUUUUCK, and this… is going to be what buffy had already become once Whedon spent less time on that show and more on Angel, isn’t it?
Because the original sucked because of executive meddling, and the remake minus whedon kinda sucked in those later seasons, so this isn’t like the BSG remake where they took an intrinsically goofy show and made it awesome for a season or two, or Star Trek where they had a franchise that could still make some money despite Berman and Braga raping it in both ears throughout the 90s, this’ll be like the Pink Panther remake – an attempt to reboot an old and beloved series that had already been run into the ground and thus did not really need a modern remake to run it further downwards.
Though I’d watch Inspector Clouseau The Vampire Slayer.
And on the plus side: no Whedon means less rape and more asian people, making this re-remake a net win for asian people who don’t like rape.
>I think everyone should do what Marvel does and say that movie rights revert back after a few years if you don’t use them.
Wouldn’t help. The reboot is being done by Fran Rubel Kuzui, director and producer of the original movie. She and her husband bought the script pretty much outright from Whedon, before he had enough clout to make better deals, and thus still owns enough rights to do whatever she wants with the idea. It’s why she was listed as executive producer on the show, in spite of having nothing to do with it.
I liked the original movie; I liked the series, give or take most of a season. I’ll give the reboot a chance, as long as the vampires continue to eat people and not sparkle.
Stargate Universe is actually really good.
In fairness, the screenwriter almost always sells the copyright to the script- it’s why writers get residuals, not royalties.
I just don’t really see a hook- at the time, Buffy was a novel idea, but without the novelty or word of mouth or any real track record from the people now making it, it doesn’t really stand out. The “normal (by TV/movie standards) people fight the supernatural while trying to lead normal lives” premise is everywhere these days, and not enough time has passed since the original for there to be much to update.
Of course, it’s not nearly as crazy as the Cronenberg-less VIDEODROME I hear rumors of.
RUSH + YOUNG 4VR
The problem wasn’t that Starbuck was a girl–it was that the new Starbuck just wasn’t a very good Starbuck.
I’m trying to figure out something I would care about even less, but it’s just not coming.
Good thing you cut off that third email.
Perhaps someday Joss Whedon will create something which I will consider, based on face value, worth spending more than ten minutes of my time. But it is a slim margin.
The main flaw is of course in citing Galactica, as the original in that case was totally worthless shit, and even if you were to argue successfully that the reboot people treated it with contempt, you can’t say that it deserved any different.
“GINO” can be nothing but a compliment.
Wow, lots of hate in the thread.
Stig, I’m glad you felt compelled to spend however much time it took to tell us that you consider your time that important.
I enjoy Stargate Victims Unit (SGU), mostly for Robert Carlyle, but it’s even more fun if you imagine that any time someone says “Where the hell’s Rush?” that in the next instant, Geddy Lee & the boys will pop in and launch into an epic performance of “Tom Sawyer”.
Yeah, nice of everyone to take some time out of their busy schedules to demonstrate their lack of caring. Obviously, giving a damn about the quality of pop/pulp entertainment is utterly silly and uncool on a blog that frequently hosts extended discussions about ‘storytelling engines’, ‘why I should write Doctor Strange’ and ‘Civil War: I Make Fun Of It Because It’s Not A Rex The Wonder Dog/Archie Team-Up’.
Of course, none of the shows/franchises MGK mentioned were that good to begin with (Star Trek possibly excepted), nor did they have their original creators still a) alive; b) involved in the original iteration; and c) clearly opposed to a reboot. But hey, respecting creator’s rights is apparently only cool when it involves the families of long-dead artists who have never created anything themselves, not actual living, breathing creators who have committed the unforgiveable sin of inspiring a vocal fanbase. After all, we wouldn’t want to pass up an opportunity for a quick snarky quip or some blasé posturing!
Does Whedon oppose it, though? I was under the impression he doesn’t really care.
I think Whedon’s response is like finding out your ex is with someone else. Probably doesn’t feel good, but what are you gonna do?
Buffy fans can be extremely myopic, though. They will talk about nothing else, and to this day, will schedule rewatches, and talk about things they’ve noticed in the 17th viewing of “Hush” like anybody is supposed to care anymore. To be honest, in a hundred years, if someone tried to use the concept in a format that does not involve James Marsters in a platinum wig, you’ll hear moaning from beyond the grave.
Speaking of the “Season 8” comics, I stopped reading a while back, but I’m curious…
…did they ever reveal the True Identity of the mysterious baddie in the black mask? (who called him/herself Midnight or Twilight or whatever?)
…never mind, I remembered that there is this thing called Google and I looked it up.
Won’t lie and say this doesn’t rankle, but…yeah, not the apocalypse. Actually, maybe it is, but only because the apocalypse is no big deal by Buffy standards.
The thing I don’t get is how this is supposed to work at ALL. I mean, in case you haven’t heard, they only have the rights to Buffy–not Willow, Xander, Giles, Angel, Spike, Sunnnydale, the Hellmouth, or any of the other elements of the TV show that originated there. So it’s basically just “high school cheerleader named Buffy kills vampires”, except they’ve ALSO said that they’re not going to set it in high school, so…it’s pretty much the title, and nothing else. Which makes it pretty easy to distance this from the show, but I don’t understand what the point is. I’d be really surprised if this makes it to the screen, frankly.
By the way, if it’s too nerdy to get het up over this, are we allowed to get annoyed over the general trend towards rebooting everything every five years or so?
“Of course, none of the shows/franchises MGK mentioned were that good to begin with (Star Trek possibly excepted)”
Oh, come on now.
When’s the LOST reboot?
@Die Macher: There was at least one a season, I think.
“except they’ve ALSO said that they’re not going to set it in high school, so…it’s pretty much the title, and nothing else. Which makes it pretty easy to distance this from the show, but I don’t understand what the point is. ”
Name recognition. There’s going to be more press for “The Buffy reboot” than there is for an original property about a female vampire hunter, some people will go see it to see how it compares to the TV show or first movie, etc. It’s not the biggest return for your IP buck, and it’s no guarantee of success, but it’s a foot in the door.
Buffy Season 8 reads like the work of a man who is desperate, DESPERATE to get this albatross off his neck but is stuck with it because it pays his bills.
