Saw the ad for the nerds show at the Lincoln movie this weekend. No. No… Nooooooooo… I’m sick of these staged “reality” contest shows. Bring back the f-cking sitcoms.

Here in the States, KOTN runs at 10 p.m. on TBS. Archer airs at the same time on FX, so the temptation to see a potential nerdface trainwreck just isn’t there. Archer can be geeky and still be awesome . . . like the offbeat “crossover” with Bob’s Burgers to kick off the fourth season last week.

Huh. When PA and MGK have such radically diverging opinions, I suppose I’ll have to watch at least one episode.

PA seems to be under the impression that the nerds competing on KotN are ennobled by their competition, when in fact the show is basically adopting a “point and laugh” strategy and quite blatantly so.

“In King of the Nerds, being like me is the only way to win.”

The only way to “win” King of the Nerds is not to be on the show in the first place.

I don’t know if I’d want to be King of the Nerds; we have a history of quite brutally tearing down our idols.

Yeah, I think PA’s wrong on this one. They’re looking for the wrong kind of positivity. If you really want to be positive about it, it’s shows like this that keep “nerd” a pejorative term, which is great; the kind of weirdos who actually call themselves that will segregate themselves, and the rest of us can talk about our disreputable interests like adults. And preferably in secret, or at least under fake names.

That’s why the whole “fake nerd girls” debate is mistaken. It’s not the degree to which these girls engage with nerdy things, nor the sincerity with which they do. It’s that these girls are fundamentally normal people, openly engaging with Star Wars or the Avengers or Doctor Who, and taking formerly derogatory labels on as perfectly valid titles. It’s ruining a perfectly good insult.

For what it’s worth, the PA comic seems very much like damning with faint praise to me.

The newspost was pretty positive.

I gotta be honest, I was intrigued by the whole “We made them pick teams with an odd man out, but the odd man out wins, instead of going off to sit by themselves during recess” thing.

yeah, I’m not gonna watch it, ’cause I don’t watch reality TV, but the “Person who gets picked last actually wins” is genuinely pretty clever and a nice touch.

Perhaps the ‘king’ will be the one who stops defining themselves by how the other kids treated him or her in high school?
