I am happy because this week I had the chance to reference the old “Give Like Santa, Save Like Scrooge” commercials Canadian Tire did every Christmas when I was growing up:
And we may joke about the prices back then for a Commodore 128 (and I had a Commodore when I was growing up and it was the best computer ever, dammit), but what strikes me is that this advert dates itself not by what’s being sold so much as the fact that they actually mention the specific prices in the ad. That just doesn’t happen any more.

Torontoist asked me to do that thing I do regarding Hizzoner Rob Ford, who on his first day in the job decided he wanted to kill an $8 billion transit extension that was almost entirely funded by the province and federal government in favour of a single subway line that would cost the city more than three times as much.

Over at Gore Sports, they are having their sorta-annual Bash Wars tournament, featuring thirty-two combatants duking it out as determined by voters’ votes. Rex The Wonder Dog is, unsurprisingly, the number one seed in his bracket. This is right and proper. However, he is currently trailing an ordinary housecat who doesn’t even do anything awesome. It’s just a frigging cat. That cat probably doesn’t even speak Polish!
So if you have a Livejournal account, go join the Gore Sports community, and then vault Rex to his proper place, which is upon a throne built of cat-skulls.

Originally invented by Leonard Pierce, Wikibombing is the hot Internet sport wherein you find two related categories on Wikipedia, and the nerdier of the two is, inevitably, the longer article. The original Wikibomb was “Knight” as compared to “Jedi Knight,” but that is now out of date thanks to some medieval history buffs. However, there are always new Wikibombs to be found!
For example:
Asgard
VS.
Asgard in Marvel comics
“The Brave Little Tailor”
VS.
Garak on Deep Space Nine
the Lancia Stratos
VS.
Wheeljack
Beat those!

Also, it’s not airing on Canadian telly so it’s not in the column, but – the new American version of Top Gear is really dreadful, isn’t it? Jeremy Clarkson might be a colossal dickhead, but at least he’s sort of self-aware about being a colossal dickhead, and May/Hammond similarly recognize that although their love for cars is heartfelt it’s also sort of absurd. You don’t get that from the American hosts (Adam Ferrara and two professional car-guys who are wastes of on-camera space). They’re totally serious about how much they love cars. It’s kind of boring.

…but I spent last night playing Corporation Inc., which will probably explode in popularity once it spreads around due to its mini-sim-ness quality to it.
Still feels very much like the start of a game rather than a game itself; this is something where you can see the designers inventing missions, objectives, customizing it in many different ways, etc. But it’s well worth a play or six hundred.
